No national research has yet explored the prevalence of asthma among adults in Lebanon. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma and current asthma, and their determinants among Lebanese adults 16 years old or above.

While it is suggested that the prevalence of asthma in developed countries may have stabilized, this is not clear in currently developing countries. Current available information for both adults and children simultaneously on the burden and impact of allergic conditions in Colombia and in many Latin American countries is limited.

The prevalence of physician-diagnosed-asthma has risen over the past three decades and misdiagnosis of asthma is potentially common. Objective: to determine whether a secondary-screening-program to establish a correct diagnosis of asthma in those who report a physician diagnosis of asthma is cost effective.

Severe asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can be challenging to manage, particularly when the clinical features may be similar. With the increased availability of advanced therapies for both entities, it is more important than ever to diagnose and phenotype accurately to inform appropriate treatment decisions.

Chest computed tomography (CT) scans have a recognised role in investigating adults with severe asthma to exclude alternative diagnoses, but its role in children is less clear. The objective of this study was to review the CT findings of our local cohort of children with severe asthma and to explore whether clinical or pathobiological parameters predicted CT changes.

Epidemiological research on health effects of livestock exposure in population subgroups with compromised respiratory health is still limited. The present study explored the association between livestock exposure and comorbid/concurrent conditions in patients with overlapping diagnoses of asthma and COPD.

The 12-week, multicentre, observational INITIAL study (NCT02143739) assessed asthma severity in newly diagnosed Chinese patients. Methods: Post hoc analysis of medication combinations prescribed per routine clinical practice at baseline, and the impact on control levels evaluated using 2012 vs 2018 Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) criteria.

Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) is used to assess of airway inflammation; diagnose asthma and monitor adherence to advised therapy. Reliable and accurate reference values for FENO are needed for both non-smoking and current smoking adults in the clinical setting.

Asthma is the most common chronic childhood illness, with rapidly increasing prevalence in lowincome countries. Among young children, asthma is often under-diagnosed. We investigated the factors associated with asthma among under-fives presenting with acute respiratory symptoms at Mulago hospital, Uganda.

Little attention has been paid to asthma in ‘under-fives’ in Sub-Saharan Africa. In ‘under-fives’, acute asthma and pneumonia have similar clinical presentation and most children with acute respiratory symptoms are diagnosed with pneumonia according to the WHO criteria.

Education of parents concerning the working mechanism, indications and use of asthma medications are an essential part of asthma education. Asthma education should be repeated frequently to parents of children with long-term airway problems or diagnosed asthma.

This is especially true if you are targeting a community of color or a low income community. In the U.S., there are significant differences in the way ill health affects different communities. Consider, for example, that on many Indian reservations, over half the population suffers from diabetes. Or that African American children of all income levels are hospitalized for asthma at three times the rate of white children. Consider that Latinos are more likely to be newly diagnosed with HIV infection than white people, but 1.

The primary finding of this paper is that carbon monoxide (CO) has a significant effect on hospitalizations for asthma among children ages 1 to 18, while none of the pollutants considered has a clear impact on hospitalizations for infants. This discrepancy across age groups is possibly due to the complications inherent in diagnosing asthma in infants. To assess the importance of these findings, I analyze California’s Low-Emission Vehicle II standards and find that nearly 15-20% of the costs from this policy are recovered in asthma hospitalizations for children alone.

Opportunity: Asthma and type 1 diabetes (T1D) are major causes of chronic morbidity in childhood. Canada has the sixth highest occurrence rate of T1D in children 14 years or younger in the world, and the incidence is rising. In the next 10 years, approximately 36,000 Canadians will be diagnosed with T1D and 5,800 will die of complications from the disease.
