The field and laboratory experiments were carried out with twenty-two brinjal varieties during post–kharif season of 2013-2015 in the Central Research Farm, Gayeshpur, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya. The morphological characteristics of brinjal leaves are associated with attraction, feeding and oviposition of the insect pests.

Thirty five accessions of brinjal were assessed for variability for nineteen characters. Highly significant differences were observed among the accessions. High phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation was observed for number of fruits per cluster, number of fruits per plant, fruit length, fruit width, average fruit weight, fruit yield per plant, ascorbic acid content, total phenol content, shoot and fruit borer infestation indicating the existence of wider genetic variability for these traits in the germplasm.

The present study was carried out at AB District Seed Farm, BCKV, Kalyani Simanta, West Bengal, India during spring-summer 2012-13 and 2013-14, autumn-winter 2013-14 and 2014-15 with 40 brinjal genotypes in Randomized Block Design with two replications. Highly significant differences were observed for majority of the characters for the two factors viz., genotypes (G) and season (S) and their interaction (G X S). Paired t-test also clearly demonstrated the influence of season on the performance of eggplant germplasm.

Genetic divergence among 50 eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) genotypes was estimated using Mahalanobis D2 Statistics. The 50 genotypes were grouped into eight distinct clusters. Among the different clusters, cluster II, V and VIII consisted maximum number of genotypes(9) followed by cluster cluster IV (7) and in cluster I, III, VI and VII each were having 4 genotypes.

The present experiment was laid down in randomized block design in two different environments (E1 and E2) with the objective to assess the magnitude of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance among 18 yield attributing traits in brinjal. The analysis of variance revealed that significant genetic differences were present among the brinjal genotypes representing the existence of significant amount of variability widening the greater scope for the improvement of concerned characters through selection.

Response of different brinjal genotypes against brinjal shoot and fruit borer (Leucinodes orbonalis Guenee.) was evaluated at horticulture research field of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (C.G) during kharif, 2015-2016. 106 brinjal germplasm lines were evaluated for resistance to shoot and fruit borer. Minimum mean infestation in fruits was found in genotype IGB-92 (20.83%) while maximum mean infestation in fruits was recorded in IGB-89 (79.30%).

In order to assess genetic divergence among thirty genotypes of brinjal, Mahalanobis D2 statistics was applied. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the genotypes for all the traits. Based on divergence analysis thirty genotypes were grouped into 10 clusters. Cluster II was the largest having nine genotypes followed by cluster III (8) and cluster I (6). Clusters IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and X are solitary with one genotype each. Among the ten clusters, cluster III with eight genotypes showed maximum intracluster distance followed by cluster II and cluster I.

Genetic divergence among 30 eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) genotypes was estimated using Mahalanobis D2 Statistics. The 30 genotypes were grouped into six distinct clusters. Among the different clusters, cluster III consisted maximum number of genotypes (8 genotypes) followed by cluster I and VI (5 genotypes), cluster II, IV and V contained (4 genotypes). The highest intra-cluster distance was recorded for cluster I (1250.024) followed by cluster II (1217.052) and the lowest intra-cluster distance was recorded for cluster-V (389.277).

In this research fifty F4 progenies of brinjal were subjected to study the extent of variability present in the experimental material. Analysis of variance indicated presence of large variability for different characters under study. Most of the growth, flowering, fruit and yield characters under study were found significantly varied. The magnitude of phenotypic variance was greater than genotypic variance in all the characters under the study.

Genetic variability studies for yield and yield attributing traits in Brinjal (Solanum melongena L.)
The investigation on ―Phenotypic evaluation and genetic variability studies in brinjal (Solanum melongena L.)‖ was undertaken during kharif season of 2017. Sixty brinjal genotypes were evaluated in randomized block design with two replications in vegetable science block, Dept. of Vegetable Science, Kittut Rani Channamma College of Horticulture, Arabhavi under the University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot. In the study, analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among genotypes for most of characters studied. The growth parameters viz.

A field investigation as carried out with 35 genotypes of brinjal at Department of Vegetable Science, SKLTSHU, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad during Rabi, 2017-18. The RBD ANOVA revealed highly significant differences among the genotypes for all the traits indicating the presence of sufficient variability in the experimental material. Selection of suitable parents is an important criterion for success of crop improvement program. Mean performance of germplasm under study showed that the IC-136148 recorded the highest plant height (104.19 cm), number of fruits per plant (26.

The present investigations were carried out at college of Horticulture, Venkataramannagudem during rabi 2016-17 to evaluate the response of 60 brinjal genotypes and 3 check varieties against shoot and fruit borer, Leucinodes orbonalis (Guenee). The experiment was laid in Augmented Block Design with eight blocks. Results revealed that significant differences among tested genotypes and the check cultivars with regard to mean per cent shoot infestation. The mean per cent shoot infestation ranged from 8.84 to 33.71. The genotype IC 136061 recorded the lowest shoot infestation (8.

Brinjal production is threatened by bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum in the developing world. Evaluation in search of best performing genotypes against bacterial wilt disease and incorporating their genes in commercial cultivars is an effective attempt to the problem. Studies on genetic variability and heritability, along with degree of association between the various characters and direct effects of yield contributing characters on total yield, is of paramount significance in framing an appropriate breeding strategy.

In brinjal, lower marketable yield could be attributed to susceptibility of genotypes to shoot and fruit borer. The present investigation in brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) was undertaken during kharif season of 2016 for high marketable yield and fruit borer resistance. Hundred brinjal genotypes along with two checks were evaluated in Augmented design in University of Horticultural and Agricultural Sciences, Shivamogga. Analysis of variance revealed high significant differences among genotypes for fifteen out of nineteen characters studied.
