  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of salinity on germination and emergence of chilli cultivars and to investigate the ability for genetic salt tolerance during germination and seedling growth. Although some of the chilli genotypes have salinity tolerance to some extent, more attention is required to assess the cultivars for salinity resistance/tolerance so as to screen them and select best types suitable to cultivate under areas prone to soil salinity.

Bulet, an experiment was conducted in Gangetic Alluvial plain of West Bengal. Six organic manures in different combinations were applied along with Urea at three levels (25%, 50%, and 75). Result showed that plant height and number of branches per plant was found maximum with a combination of vermicompost and urea at 50%. Flowering was delayed with increase in inorganic nitrogen level (25, 50 and 75%) in the growing media.

  • For most quantitative traits in crop plants, genotype × environment interaction (GEI) is the rule rather than the exception. The best approach to cope with GEI is to exploit it by identifying genotypes best suited to specific environments so that the productivity in given environment is maximized.

  • Eleven genotypes of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) were investigated to understand the extent of genetic diversity through 16 growth and yield attributing characters. Genetic diversity in chilli genotypes based on sixteen characters was estimated using Mahalanobis’s D2 statistics. The genotypes were grouped into four different clusters by non-hierarchical clustering. The cluster I had the maximum number (7) of genotypes while cluster III and IV each contained only one genotype. Cluster II and III had highest inter cluster distance (249.759) followed by cluster III and IV (239.433).

  • Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is an important spice crop severely affected by the virus causes leaf curl symptoms. Efficient transmission of Chilli Leaf Curl Virus was done by using a standardized buffer for sap inoculation to chilli plants. In present investigation, we have used three simple methods i.e. inoculation by syringe, rubbing and by immersion (dip) for sap inoculation and found reproducible when the sap from the infected plants was inoculated onto healthy plants. Out of the three methods used, syringe inoculation was found most efficient method for sap transmission.

  • Cytoplasmic Male sterility (CMS) is increasingly utilized for hybrid seed production of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.). Eight CMS and eight maintainer lines were studied for different morphological characters and pollen sterility. The CMS lines viz., AVPP0711S, AVPP0709S, AVPP0710S, AVPP0309S and AVPP0310S were found to be most sterile. It has been concluded that wide range of genetic variability existed for the different floral biological and morphological characters which could be utilized for systematic exploration in chilli improvement programme through hybridization.

  • Pythium damping-off of Chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) is very common problem in fields and greenhouses, whereas the organism kills newly emerged seedlings. In present investigation repeated isolations from rotten seeds as well as toppled seedlings of Chilli cv. Pusa Jwala have yielded the cultures of P. aphanidermatum. The damping off mainly being soil borne, the primary infections are needed to be controlled with suitable fungicides. The different fungicides and bioagents were evaluated as seed dressers and soil drenching.
