  • Five mungbean varieties released by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU911, SML668, ML818, ML613 and SML832) were characterized using morphological and molecular markers. Phenotypically these varieties showed variation for growth habit, leaf and flower characters, pod colour, position and length, plant height, seed coat lusture and seed size during different growth stages of the crop. Plant morphology characters being polygenic in nature are liable to be influenced by the environment.

  • A laboratory experiment was conducted at Microbiology Lab (AICRP-WC), University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad during 2012-13 in order to prepare sugarbeet wine from different varieties of Tropical Sugarbeet (TSB). Four TSB varieties were selected viz. Magnolia, PAC 60008, Calixta and SZ 35 for wine preparation. In the first four treatments, the sugarbeet juice was obtained and directly assembled for fermentation without any TSS adjustment (T1 to T4). The obtained juice TSS was adjusted to 23 0 brix in the next four set of treatments (T5 to T8).

  • An attempt has been made to explore different types of algae from Panikhaiti area of Guwahati, Assam using Winogradsky column. In order to prepare Winogradsy column, soil and water samples were collected from different locations. A transparent, clear plastic bottle was taken and filled with 500g of soil and over layered with 500ml of water sample. The columns were enriched with different carbon and nitrogen supplements. They were covered with plastic sheets and few holes were punctured on them. These were incubated at room temperature (±28°C) in presence of sunlight.

  • A study was conducted to know the petiole nutrient content in different grape genotypes belonging to table purpose white and coloured types along with wine grape types. Petiole nutrient contents among three different grapes types varied significantly. Petiole P, K, Mn and Zn contents among the three grape types varied in the order: table white > table coloured > wine grape. Petiole P, Ca, Mn and Cu content of wine and table purpose white type differed significantly, where as other macro and micro nutrients did not differ significantly.

  • A total of 24 blast infected samples were collected from major finger millet growing areas of Tamil Nadu and also from All India Coordinated Small Millets Improvement Project Centres (ICAR) in India. Pathogenicity test with Magnaporthe grisea isolates showed highly significant differences in virulence on the variety KM 252 in the severity of leaf blast. Among the five different media tested, the Oat Meal Agar medium (OMA) was found to be best for the growth of M. grisea isolates and all the isolates produced white colony colour.   • The research was conducted to prepare β-carotene rich dahi with different levels of sweet potato (SP) juice (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50%). Different physical, nutritional and sensory characteristics were analysed to assay the quality of β-carotene rich dahi. Data on different parameters were recorded and analyzed. It was found that the physical, nutritional and sensory qualities of dahi improved by addition of Sweet potato juice. Addition of SP juice increases the Protein (3.60 to 6.77g), Ash (0.71 to 3.79%) and βcarotene content (4.52 mg/100g).

  • Coconut inflorescence sap or neera is a sweet translucent juice extracted from unopened inflorescence of coconut, which is oyster white in colour with high nutritive value. Studies revealed that sap yield and quality differed with respect to coconut genotypes and season. Hence a study was carried out to find out the influence of genotypes and season on coconut inflorescence sap yield and quality. The results revealed that the coconut genotypes varied significantly with respect to yield of coconut inflorescence sap.

  • Healthy seeds of different varieties of rice (PD 6, NDR 359, PD 16 and PS 5) and wheat (UP 262, UP 2628, PBW 175 and UP 2554) were germinated and fourteen days after germination, young rice/wheat seedlings were transferred to half strength of Hogland solution (pH 7.0) containing either recommended levels of Zn (0.05 mg Zn L-1 ) or no Zn for four days. For solidification of medium 0.4% w/v agar- agar was mixed in the Hogland solutions of both –Zn and +Zn. Prior to solidification, 11.25 mL of 0.1% bromothymol blue dye solution prepared in 60 % ethanol and was mixed to agar nutrient solution.

  • In the present study, sixty four aromatic landraces of rice collected from different districts of Madhya Pradesh were analysed for genetic variation using SSR markers.
