  • Ebook "Anolis lizards of the Caribbean: Ecology, evolution, and plate tectonics" are ideally suited for the study of evolutionary ecology. Offering fascinating insights into the more than 150 species dispersed throughout the Caribbean islands, Jonathan Roughgarden details the differences between species in a wide range of behavioral and physical characteristics, including foraging behaviors, body size, and habitat use, resulting from evolutionary divergences concurrent with the plate-tectonic origins of the region.

  • Knowledge of a predator’s diet is important for understanding its ecology and for predicting its influence on the dynamics of prey populations. We investigated the spatial distribution and diet composition of the leopard (Panthera pardus) in the northeastern Himalayan region of Pakistan. We used molecular scatology technique to identify scats of common leopard collected from the field. The leopard was recorded at 30 different surveyed sites with an elevational range between 757–1891 m a.s.l. Its diet comprised 17 prey species, including both wild and domestic prey.

  • Chagas disease is a parasitic infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. It is an important public health problem affecting around seven to eight million people in the Americas. A large number of hematophagous triatomine insect species, occupying diverse natural and human-modified ecological niches transmit this disease. Triatomines are long-living hemipterans that have evolved to explode different habitats to associate with their vertebrate hosts.

  • Niche differentiation is a prominent hypothesis explaining the maintenance of tree species diversity in tropical forests (Connell 1978). It suggests that different species are best suited to different habitats in which they are completely dominant and more abundant than in less suitable habitats (Harms et al. 2001). In addition, distribution patterns of tropical trees are generally more clumped or aggregated than random (Condit et al. 2000). Furthermore, environmental heterogeneity (difference in soil, elevation, slope, etc.

  • Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic microorganisms capable of producing high value pigments like phycoerythrin, phycocyanin, allophycocyanin, chlorophyll and carotenoids. These high value pigments have immense commercial value as they have applications in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. In the present study, using soil and water samples collected from different ecological niches of India, 10 isolates of heterocystous and 09 isolates of non- heterocystous cyanobacteria were obtained.

  • The biomass production of Trichoderma species is greatly influenced by the type of nutritional sources besides environmental factors. To evaluate the influence of nutrient sources on the biomass production of T. viride various carbon sources such as peptone, mannitol, glucose and nitrogen sources such as ammonium sulphate, urea and potassium nitrate were used in this study. Among the tested carbon sources, significantly highest biomass production was observed in peptone supplemented media followed by glucose and mannitol.

  • Entomopathogenic fungi suppress the diverse group of insect pest such as coleopterans, lepidopterous and sucking pest. Wide spread incidence of Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus tamarii was observed during extensive and repeated survey covering different agro ecological niches of Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nasik and Beed districts of Maharashtra (India) on insect cadavers infected with fungi. From the insect cadavers the fungal isolates were isolated on PDA media.

  • This study is a first tentative attempt to understand the driving abiotic factors affecting the distribution of 7 oak taxa and 3 hybrids in Lebanon and to elucidate differences amongst the ecological niche. A field survey was conducted all over Lebanon, where taxa at 91 points were georeferenced and inventoried.

  • Since the first production of tools at the beginning of human presence on Earth, human evolution is linked to the invention of new tools, usually combined with new environmental adaptations. The symbiosis of man with tools and environments represents one of the main factors in human evolutionary processes. It is evident how this coupling is based on the biophysics of our bodies and the development of the social memory system called culture.
