The isolates differed between itself in host range. All of these isolates except two were able to induce galls on kalanchoe, sunflower, datura, tobacco and chenopodium. Only five isolates produced galls on tomato. All isolates caused necrosis on grapevine explants.

Our main purpose was to evaluate the expression of plastic and evolved genes involved in ecological speciation in the noctuid moth Spodoptera frugiperda, the fall armyworm (FAW); and to demonstrate how host plants might influence lineage differentiation in this polyphagous insect. FAW is an important pest of several crops worldwide, and it is differentiated into host plant-related strains, corn (CS) and rice strains (RS).

Gymnosporangium spp. are fungal plant pathogens causing rust disease and most of them are known to infect two different host plants (heteroecious) with four spore stages (demicyclic). In the present study, we sequenced the transcriptome of G. japonicum teliospores on its host plant Juniperus chinensis and we performed comparison to the transcriptomes of G. yamadae and G. asiaticum at the same life stage, that happens in the same host but on different organs.

Massive techniques have been evaluated for developing different pest control methods to minimize fertilizer and pesticide inputs. As “push-pull” strategy utilizes generally non-toxic chemicals to manipulate behaviors of insects, such strategy is considered to be environmentally friendly.

Whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci) are phloem sap-sucking pests that because of their broad host range and ability to transmit viruses damage crop plants worldwide. B. tabaci are now known to be a complex of cryptic species that differ from each other in many characteristics such as mode of interaction with viruses, invasiveness, and resistance to insecticides.

Fungi of the genus Botrytis (presently containing ~ 35 species) are able to infect more than 1400 different plant species and cause losses in a wide range of crops of economic importance. The best studied species is B. cinerea, which has a broad host range and is one of the best studied necrotrophic plant pathogenic fungi.

To understand the genetic mechanisms of insect herbivory, the transcriptional response of insects feeding on different host plant species has to be studied. Here, we generated gene expression data of the generalist herbivore Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) feeding on three selected host plant species and a control (artificial diet).

Macrophomina phaseolina is a fungal plant pathogen with a broad host range, but one genotype was shown to exhibit host preference/specificity on strawberry. This pathogen lacked a high-quality genome assembly and annotation, and little was known about genomic differences among isolates from different hosts.

Phytophagous insects, along with their host plants and natural enemies, may constitute as much as 75% of the species on the earth and are abundant in all terrestrial ecosystems (Strong et al., 1984). It is therefore, the present investigation was undertaken to assess the diversity of arthropods and their natural enemies at trophic levels of cabbage ecosystem.

The common cutworm, Spodoptera litura Fabricius is a leaf and fruit feeding generalist insect of the order Lepidoptera and a destructive agriculture pest. The broad host range of the herbivore is due to its ability to downregulate plant defense across different plants.

Spiroplasma citri comprises a bacterial complex that cause diseases in citrus, horseradish, carrot, sesame, and also infects a wide array of ornamental and weed species. S. citri is transmitted in a persistent propagative manner by the beet leafhopper, Neoaliturus tenellus in North America and Circulifer haematoceps in the Mediterranean region.

The pine wood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, is a devastating pathogen of many Pinus species in China. The aim of this study was to understand the interactive molecular mechanism of PWN and its host by comparing differentially expressed genes and candidate effectors from three transcriptomes of B. xylophilus at different infection stages.

With the expanding ash dieback epidemic that has spread across the European continent, an improved functional understanding of the disease development in afflicted hosts is needed. The study investigated whether differences in necrosis extension between common ash (Fraxinus excelsior) trees with different levels of susceptibility to the fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus are associated with, and can be explained by, the differences in gene expression patterns.

Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn (Teleomorph: Thanatephorus cucumeris) is a soil borne, polyphagous, necrotrophic plant pathogenic fungus with a wide host range. It is causing sheath blight disease on a wide range of Graminae plant hosts and causes considerable losses in yield. It incites banded sheath blight disease in small millets, with its characteristic copper brown band symptoms. Fifty three isolates of Rhizoctonia solani were obtained from four different small millets showing typical symptoms of the disease.

The role of AM (Arbuscular mycorrhizal) fungi in the rhizosphere of onion at induced salt stress was studied. A pot culture experiment was set up with three levels of salts and six treatments involving mycorrhizal inoculations with host crop as onion. The initial observations of the soil physico-chemical analysis on comparison with postharvest soil revealed that there was significant difference in nutrient availability as well as uptake by the plants.
