Ebook "Invertebrate immunity" gathered scientists who are working with different invertebrates, and it can be seen that the insects are the still attracting most research and researchers. However, an increasing interest is emerging to study new invertebrate groups, especially those where the genome is known, as seen in Chapters 1, 5, 14 and 15.

Ebook "Ane’s encyclopedic dictionary of general and applied entomology" has been written keeping in view the fact that different terminology employed in teaching and researchers on different aspects of studies on insects and their management is found in scattered sources. Moreover, in the last 3-4 decades, many developments have been made especially in economic entomology. An attempt has been made to present the terminology in entomology and pest management in the most authentic and comprehensive way keeping the requirements of teachers and researchers in mind.

Edible insects are an important source of nutrients that can help to cover certain nutritional deficiencies. This is the case with Macrotermes subhyalinus, a species of termite widely consumed in Côte d'Ivoire. This study was carried out to assess the mineral content and their bioavailability in the different castes (winged, queen and soldier) of this species.

The transformer (tra) is a sex determining switch in different orders of insects, including Diptera, as in the family Tephritidae. The lifelong autoregulatory loop of tra female-specific splicing can be reset by the intervention of male-specific primary signals (M factor).

The agricultural pest Ceratitis capitata, also known as the Mediterranean fruit fly or Medfly, is a fruit crop pest of very high economic relevance in different continents. The strategy to separate Ceratitis males from females (sexing) in mass rearing facilities is a useful step before the sterilization and release of male-only flies in Sterile Insect Technique control programs (SIT).

Many common and relevant diseases affecting equine welfare have yet to be tested regarding structural variants such as copy number variations (CNVs). CNVs make up a substantial proportion of total genetic variability in populations of many species, resulting in more sequence differences between individuals than SNPs.

Twenty-six species of insect pests belonging to thirteen families, eight orders were identified after the surveys in some gardens of the water apple (Syzygium samarangense) in Hoa An Commune of Caolanh city, Dongthap province, Southern Vietnam. Some species of the pests, e.g., Aleuroclava aucubae, Trialeurodes lauri, Trichopsocus clarus, are new recorded in Vietnam.

The jumping plant-louse Triozoida limbata is monophagous on guava (Psidium guajava), inducing leaf galls. Guava is planted today in warmer regions around the world but T. limbata is restricted to Central and South America. Recently, the latter has become a key pest in commercial plantations in Brazil (Pernambuco and São Paulo). Modeling of potential distributions is a good tool for developing control strategies of insect pests. Based on distributional data from the Americas, we created models for the psyllids for the present and future using different scenarios of climate change.

Microsporidia are mostly very small, intracellular, spore-forming pathogens classified as Protista and reported in every major group of animals. Insects are one of the most widely distributed hosts for microsporidia. Many entomopathogenic microsporidia cause chronic infections in insects and their effects appear as reduced fertility and pupal weight, reduced fecundity and shortened longevity. Crepidopdera aurata (Coleoptera; Chrysomelidae) is one of the most destructive pests in poplar nurseries.

Wireworms are polyphagous soil-dwelling pests that are hard to control. Attract-and-kill strategies, combining attractive semiochemicals with biocontrol agents, have great promise to control insect pests. We hypothesized that the combination of plant semiochemicals and entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) in an attract-and-kill system could greatly enhance the nematodes’ efficiency against wireworms. We evaluated the potential of alginate beads loaded with plant extracts and EPNs to control Agriotes obscurus.

In this study, the adult male B. polychresta as a model to evaluate the exposure risks in soil insects inhabiting three different agricultural locations. The HMs concentration and contamination indices within the soil and beetles from study sites were assessed. Moreover, the enzymatic changes and TPc were evaluated in the beetle tissue (gut, fat body, and testis) in these sites. Furthermore, we check the possible relationship interactions between enzyme activities; against HMs accumulation in the whole body tissue of beetles.

Temperature and grain moisture content are the main factors affecting grain spoilage in storage. These factors have a significant impact on the maintenance of quality, insect, fungus, and pest development. The main objective of this study was to determine the CO2 concentration and respiration rate of hulled einkorn wheat in different temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C) and grain moisture contents (9.1%, 11.5%, 13.8%, and 15.9%, wet basis) by means of CO2 sensors.

Our main purpose was to evaluate the expression of plastic and evolved genes involved in ecological speciation in the noctuid moth Spodoptera frugiperda, the fall armyworm (FAW); and to demonstrate how host plants might influence lineage differentiation in this polyphagous insect. FAW is an important pest of several crops worldwide, and it is differentiated into host plant-related strains, corn (CS) and rice strains (RS).

Trypanosoma brucei brucei, the parasite causing Nagana in domestic animals, is closely related to the parasites causing sleeping sickness, but does not infect humans. In addition to its importance as a pathogen, the relative ease of genetic manipulation and an innate capacity for RNAi extend its use as a model organism in cell and infection biology. During its development in its mammalian and insect (tsetse fly) hosts, T. b. brucei passes through several different life-cycle stages.

Chagas disease is a parasitic infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. It is an important public health problem affecting around seven to eight million people in the Americas. A large number of hematophagous triatomine insect species, occupying diverse natural and human-modified ecological niches transmit this disease. Triatomines are long-living hemipterans that have evolved to explode different habitats to associate with their vertebrate hosts.

Photorhabdus luminescens is an enteric bacterium, which lives in mutualistic association with soil nematodes and is highly pathogenic for a broad spectrum of insects. A complete genome sequence for the type strain P. luminescens subsp. laumondii TT01, which was originally isolated in Trinidad and Tobago, has been described earlier. Subsequently, a rifampicin resistant P. luminescens strain has been generated with superior possibilities for experimental characterization.
