Digging efficiency

The parameters influencing the digging of onion were identified and determined. We have measured the maximum depth of onion in the soil, onion stem height and width of onion coverage in the soil for Allium cepa variety.

The tractor drawn ginger harvester cum elevator was developed with an objective to have mechanical means for harvesting of ginger crop. The components were designed and developed keeping in view the relevant crop, soil and machine parameters. The machine consisted of a main frame, digging blade, depth gauge wheel, vibration unit, power transmission system, and conveying mechanism. The performance evaluation of developed machine was evaluated at Chitta village of Bidar district of Karnataka State. The experiment was undertaken in red clay soil; the observed moisture content was 13.

Potato is the major crop grown in country. It is rich source of carbohydrate, used all over the country. Potato is harvested when it attains the physiologic maturity. Potato harvesting is time consuming operation due to its various activity taken place at the same time. There is different equipment of harvesting the potato from the field. This equipment is tractor operated, animal drawn, or hand operated. Tractor operated potato digger cum elevator is mainly used for digging and exposing potato tubers simultaneously. The digger was found to perform very well under varying soil condition.

Performance evaluation of tractor drawn turmeric digger was studied by conducting experiments on a test set-up having provision to vary design variables. The test set-up consists of digging unit and soil separation unit. Three digging blades are selected i.e. Strips shape, Inverted 'V' shape and Crescent shape for digger machine for comparing on field test. The design parameters - soil moisture content, rake angle of digging unit and speed of operation of digger machine were evaluated.
