The heterotrophic dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans was a major component of plankton samples in the Sinop region, presenting its highest values in April 2005. Mesozooplankton abundance values showed significant differences (except 2007–2009 and 2008–2009) during the 5-year sampling period. Since the middle of 2006, an increase in abundance, biomass, and biodiversity of mesozooplankton has been detected. Many mesozooplanktonic species/groups showed seasonality in the study (especially Cladocera species). This seasonality was determined to be based on temperature changes.

In this paper, Protoperidinium carum was re-described in details of cell morphology, plate patterns and thecal ornamentation, especially the second anterior intercalary plate (2a) is wide pentagonal instead of hexagonal type as in the previous descriptions. This species was illustrated with line drawing, light and scanning electron microscope photographs. P. carum was newly recorded in Southeast Asia and Vietnamese waters.

The diversity and abundance of dinoflagellates in the inshore waters off Karwar and Kali estuary was studied for a period of thirteen months (Dec 14 to Dec 15). Thirty two species of dinoflagellates were recorded during the study of which thrifty one species of dinoflagellates were recorded in the inshore waters off Karwar and twenty eight species of dinoflagellates were recorded in Kali estuary which joins the Arabian sea. Ceratium was dominant genera in both inshore waters and Kali estuary.

The species composition and seasonal distribution of phytoplankton in Orduzu Dam Lake was studied for a year. Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) were most diverse, followed by green algae (Chlorophyta), blue-green algae (Cyanophyta), euglenoids (Euglenophyta) and dinoflagellates (Dinophyta).

The presence of a dinoflagellate species, Citharistes regius Stein belonging to genus Citharistes Stein, is reported for the first time from the eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. This species is also a first report for all Turkish seas and the Levantine Basin. Morphological characteristics of this species are described in detail and information about its ecological distribution is given.

The dinoflagellate genus Corythodinium (Stein) Loeblich Jr. & Loeblich III and one species belonging to this genus, Corythodinium tesselatum (Stein) Loeblich Jr. & Loeblich III, are reported for the first time from the coastal waters of Turkey (northeastern Mediterranean).

The presence of the dinoflagellate Heterocapsa pygmaea A.R.Loebl. in bloom quantity is reported for the first time from Mersin Bay (northern Levantine basin, eastern Mediterranean). Further, it is the only species of the family Heterocapsaceae reported from Turkish seas (southern Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea, and north-eastern Mediterranean).

The dinoflagellate species Gonyaulax pacifica Kofoid is reported for the first time from northeastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey; it has not previously been reported for any Turkish coastal waters. The morphological characteristics of this species are described in detail and information about its ecological and biogeographical distribution is given.

The genus Heterocapsa Stein is a relatively small armoured dinoflagellate. Because it has few differences in morphological characteristics among its species, species identification is difficult. In this study, small Heterocapsa sp. cells associated with a dense bloom of Cochlodinium polykrikoides Margalef were collected from the south-east coast of Iran.

The aim of this study was to identify dinoflagellate species from the Black Sea (Samsun coast) using conventional and molecular phylogenetic methods. Water samples were collected using a plankton net with 22 µm pores. Dinoflagellate cells were documented under a light microscope and were then isolated for the single-cell PCR procedure.

Seasonal distribution, abundance, and external morphological changes of Ceratium hirundinella in the Kralkızı and Dicle dam reservoirs on the Tigris River were investigated during 1 year (February 2008 to January 2009). This species was present in both dam reservoirs during all 4 seasons.

In recent years, many natural macrolactones have been found that display toxicity against the actin cytoskeleton. Pectenotoxins are macrolactones produced by species of the dinoflagellate genusDinophysis. They were ini-tially classified within the diarrheic shellfish poisoning group of toxins, because of their co-occurrence and biological origin, but mice toxicity assays demonstrated that pectenotoxins do not induce diarrheic symptoms.
