Diploid wheat

Hexaploid bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L) arose by two polyploidisation events from three diploid species with homoeologous genomes. Nullisomic-tetrasomic (nulli-tetra or NT) lines are aneuploid wheat plants lacking two and adding two of six homoeologous chromosomes.

Triticum and Aegilops diploid species have morphological and genetic diversity and are crucial genetic resources for wheat breeding. According to the chromosomal pairing-affinity of these species, their genome nomenclatures have been defined.

Ancestral wheat relatives are important sources of genetic diversity for the introduction of novel traits for the improvement of modern bread wheat. In this study the aim was to assess the susceptibility of 34 accessions of the diploid wheat Triticum monococcum (A genome) to Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici (Ggt), the causal agent of take-all disease.

Cuticular wax production on plant surfaces confers a glaucous appearance and plays important roles in plant stress tolerance. Most common wheat cultivars, which are hexaploid, and most tetraploid wheat cultivars are glaucous; in contrast, a wild wheat progenitor, Aegilops tauschii, can be glaucous or non-glaucous.

In order to clarify the origin of spring growth habit in modern domesticated wheat, allelic variability of the VRN-1 gene was investigated in a wide set of accessions of the wild tetraploid species Triticum dicoccoides (BBAA), together with diploid species T. monococcum, T. boeoticum and T. urartu, presumable donors of the A genome to polyploid wheats.

Aegilops umbellulata Zhuk. (2n = 14), a wild diploid wheat relative, has been the source of trait improvement in wheat breeding. Intraspecific genetic variation of Ae. umbellulata, however, has not been well studied and the genomic information in this species is limited.

Domesticated einkorn (Triticum monococcum L.) is one of the oldest cultivated cereal crops in the world. Its small genome size (~ 5.7 GB), low ploidy (2n = 2x = 14, AmAm) and high genetic polymorphism make this species very attractive for use as a diploid model for understanding the genomics and proteomics of Triticeae.

Inter Simple Sequence Repeats, the PCR based technique was used to reveal the genetic diversity among wheat and its wild relatives. DNA profiling of 27 wheat genotypes at all the existing ploidy levels (diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid) was done using ISSR primers. All the primers were polymorphic. The primers resulted in the amplification of 73 bands out of which 17 bands were unique. Unique bands resulted in case of all the primers. According to these 4 ISSR primers genetic similarity value was observed ranging from 0 to 1, the highest genetic similarity value (1.

In this study the aspartate aminotransferase (AAT, E.C. 2.6.1.1), phosphoglucomutase (PGM, E.C. 5.4.2.2) and phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI, E.C. 5.3.1.9) isozyme patterns of nine different diploid and tetraploid wild wheat species belonging to the Aegilops L. and Triticum L. genera were analysed electrophoretically, using horizontal starch gel and non-denaturating polyacrylamide gel (only for AAT).

The same genotypes were also assessed in field conditions for structural analyses, which were carried out based on eight yield components. The dendrogram created was comparatively analyzed with the RAPD dendrogram. There were differences between genetic and phenotypic similarity of the studied accessions.

Triticum monococcum subsp. monococcum as a first cultivated diploid wheat species possesses desirable agronomic and quality characteristics. Drought and salinity are the most dramatic environmental stress factors that have serious impact on yield and quality of crops however, plants can use alternative defense mechanisms against these stresses.

Einkorn and emmer wheat are still cultivated in the mountainous areas of Turkey. They are resistant to biotic and abiotic stress conditions and are routinely used as food stuffs due to reasonable dietary fiber rate and vitamin and micronutrient content.
