Direct seeded rice

Rice is one of the most important food crops in the world and mainly cultivated in paddy feld by transplanting seedlings. However, increasing water scarcity due to climate change, labor cost for transplanting, and competition from urbanization is making this traditional method of rice production unsustainable in the long term.

A long term field experiment was conducted since kharif 2015 for evaluating the effect of inorganic and organic sources of nutrients on soil physical properties and productivity on direct seeded rice ( Oryza satia L.) – MTU1010 under rainfed midland situation at Bastar plateau zone at S. G. College of Agriculture and Research Station, Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh. Random block design was used with twelve treatments and four replications to carry out experiment. The full recommended dose of fertilizer for rice crop was 100kg ha-1 Nitrogen, 60 kg ha-1 phosphorus and 40 kg ha-1.

An alarming fall in groundwater table in Northwest India demands a major shift from traditional method of rice cultivation to direct seeding of rice. Dry-seeded rice has emerged as a viable option to save water, labour, energy and time. Proper tillage and irrigation practices are needed to improve water productivity in dry-seeded rice through reduction in emergence of weeds and reduce ground water depletion and pesticide use. A field experiment was conducted at the research farm of the Department of Soil Science, Punjab Agricultural University...

Conventional crop establishment methods such as puddled transplanting in rice-wheat system in the Indo-Gangetic plains (IGP) require a large amount of water and labor, both of which are increasingly becoming scarce and expensive. Efforts have been made to evaluate alternate crops establishment methods, which are more efficient in. A field experiment was conducted for two years to evaluate various crop planting methods in ricewheat system for their efficiency in labor, water and energy use and economic profitability.
