Dirofilaria repens

Subcutaneous dirofilariasis is a parasitic zoonosis commonly described in Canidae but rarely seen in humans. Most physicians are unfamiliar with this disease, especially in nonendemic areas, which can lead to medication error and diagnostic and treatment delay.

Mosquitoes are vectors of several pathogens of considerable importance to humans and companion animals, including nematode helminths such as Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens that cause heartworm disease and subcutaneous dirofilariosis, respectively. In addition to mosquito-borne pathogen transmission, mosquito bites can cause discomfort and irritation in pets, and even lead to severe hypersensitivity reactions.

In the present study, a total of 315 blood samples were collected in vacutainer with and without anti-coagulant from dogs presented to Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex, Veterinary College, Shivamogga and private clinics in Mangaluru as well as dogs in nongovernmental organization at Mangaluru. The blood samples collected with anti-coagulant were used for detection of microfilaria by modified Knott’s method.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the microfilaricidal efficacy of doxycycline, ivermectin and selamectin in dogs naturally infected with D. repens. A total of eighteen dogs positive for microfilaria by modified Knott's method were included in the study. The species of microfilaria was identified as D. repens based on the morphology and micrometry by modified Knott's and Giemsa’s staining technique. The dogs were divided in to doxycycline, ivermectin and selamectin group with six dogs in each group. The drugs were administered as per standard protocol.

A study was conducted to ascertain the epidemiology of canine microfilariosis in and around Mangalore a coastal region of Karnataka for a period of one year from March-2018 to February-2019. A total of 214 blood samples were collected from dogs suspected for microfilariosis and were screened for microfilaria by modified knott's method. Among 214 samples screened, 95 samples were found positive for microfilaria with an overall prevalence of 44.39 per cent. The species of microfilaria was identified as D. repens based on the morphology and micrometry.

Nội dung bài viết trình bày trong thời gian từ tháng 8/2006 đến 11/2007, tại Bệnh viện Mắt Trung ương (BVMTW) đã khám và điều trị cho 4 bệnh nhân nhiễm giun dưới kết mạc. Triệu chứng lâm sàng chủ yếu là vướng cộm và đỏ mắt, sau đó phù nề. Phẫu thuật lấy giun ra được tiến hành cấp cứu và không có khó khăn. Mẫu giun lấy ra được gửi xét nghiệm tại Viện sốt rét ký sinh trùng (KST) và côn trùng, Viện Công nghệ Sinh học (Trung tâm khoa học công nghệ (K&C) Quốc gia).
