Distended abdomen

The present investigation was carried out to assess the efficacy of novel transcervical allantocentesis to drain allantoic fluid along with medical termination of pregnancy to treat hydrallantois affected cows. A total of seven crossbred cows were treated by this method. All the cows had clinical signs like severe bilaterally distended abdomen, respiratory distress, expiratory grunt and difficulty in walking during admission due to excessive allantoic fluid accumulation.

A five year old unspayed female Labrador dog weighing 28 kilogram was presented in Veterinary Clinical Complex, LUVAS, Hisar with a history of dehydration, uterine discharge, distended abdomen, vomition, anorexia, Anuria, inability to walk and pyrexia. On clinical examination, the rectal temperature was recorded as 104.30 F, with swollen vulva and pus discharge. The bitch was treated with prostaglandins and antibiotics however, the bitch failed to respond the treatment. Based on the history, clinical observations, radiography and ultrasonography it was diagnosed as pyometra.

A six year old male Dalmatian dog was presented with the history of not voiding urine and gradual distention of abdomen for three days. The dog showed fever and distended urinary bladder. Haematobiochemical findings were leukocytosis with neutrophilia and elevated BUN and creatinine. Radiography and ultrasonography showed distended urinary bladder with cystoliths. Cystocentesis followed by retrograde urohydropropulsion was performed and 350 ml of cloudy urine was collected by catheterization.

Hydrometra is one of the causes of infertility in goats and this condition is also called as pseudo pregnancy or cloud burst. A primiparous non-descript doe aged two and half years was presented to Referral veterinary polyclinic (Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics section) of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar with distended abdomen and history of breeding five months back. On ventral abdominal palpation and per-vaginal examination, no any fetal structures or palpable mass was felt. All the vital parameters were within the normal range.

This report deals with the successful clinical management of Leptospirosis infection in two dogs. Two dogs one Pomeranian and one Labrador of ages two years and four years respectively was presented to the Referral Veterinary Polyclinic, IVRI Izatnagar in recumbent stage having history of acute onset of vomiting, anorexia, polydipsia, polyuria and weight loss, coughing, lethargy. There were no proper record of deworming and vaccination.

Clinical case is five years old female Labrador dog presented to Small Animal Medicine unit of TVCC, VCRI, Orathanadu. History is dullness and anorexia two days. Recurrent tick infestations, anemic and thrombocytopenic crisis were regularly. Vaccination and deworming were regularly. Physical examination revealed dullness, pale mucosa, vital parameters were normal and ticks on interdigital space and in ears were noticed. Distended abdomen, hepatosplenomegaly and petechial hemorrhage on ventral abdomen were observed. Hematology revealed anemia and thrombocytopenia.

A five month old female Dachshund pup was presented to the Veterinary clinical complex, CVSC, Korutla with a history of reduced appetite, distended abdomen and dysponea since last 20 days. The case was diagnosed as ascites of hepatic origin based on clinical examination, hematological and biochemical findings. The condition was successfully managed with diuretics, liver tonics, antibiotics and hepato-protectant drugs.

A 2 year old cross bred Jersey heifer was presented with distended abdomen, history of anuria and anorexia since three days. On per rectal examination urinary bladder was palpable as an elongated, cylindrical structure of which the apex could not be reached. Left oblique flank exploratory laparotomy revealed the case of persistent urachus and a rent was found in the urachal remnant which resulted into uroperitoneum. Dissection of persistent urachus and cystorraphy were performed in the present case and uneventful recovery was recorded.

Two splenic tumor cases of dogs were presented with distended abdomen. Both the dogs showed anorexia, lethargy and not responding to medical treatment. Blood examination showed low hemoglobin and platelet counts. The dogs were surgically operated for removal of very big spleen under Propofol and isoflurane anaesthesia. Haemoabdomen was observed during surgery. Post operatively they were treated with antibiotics and Tab. Prednisolone. Both the dogs recovered uneventfully and are still alive. Histopathological examination of masses reveled splenic haemangiosarcoma.
