  • We show that epigenome- and transcriptome-wide association studies (EWAS and TWAS) are prone to significant inflation and bias of test statistics, an unrecognized phenomenon introducing spurious findings if left unaddressed. Neither GWAS-based methodology nor state-of-the-art confounder adjustment methods completely remove bias and inflation.

  • In this study, the banded karyotypes (C- and Ag-nucleolus organizer regions (NORs)) of Myotis emarginatus in Turkey were determined for the first time. The karyotype contained 44 chromosomes, the number of chromosomal arms (NF) was 54, and the number of autosomal arms (NFa) was 50. Slight C-heterochromatic blocks were observed in the centromeric regions of some autosome pairs, whereas the sex chromosomes were euchromatic. The Ag-NORs were detected in the short arms of a large and a medium-sized acrocentric autosome. The distribution of C-heterochromatin regions in Turkish populations of M.

  • A new class of formal languages will be defined the Distributed Index Languages (DI-languages). The grammar-formalism generating the new class - the DI-grammars - cover unbound dependencies in a rather natural way. The place of DI-languages in the Chomsky-hierarchy will be determined: Like Aho's indexed Languages, DI-languages represent a proper subclass of Type 1 (contextsensitive languages) and properly include Type 2 (context-free languages), but the DI-class is neither a subclass nor a superclass of Aho's indexed class. ...

  • Using market mechanisms for resource allocation in dis- tributed systems is not a new idea, nor is it one that has caught on in practice or with a large body of com- puter science research. Yet, projects that use mar- kets for distributed resource allocation recur every few years [1, 2, 3], and a new generation of research is exploring market-based resource allocation mechanisms [4, 5, 6, 7, 8] for distributed environments such as Planet- lab, Netbed, and computational grids. This paper has three goals.

  • A good model is provided by astrobiology, which studies the origin, evolution and distribution of life in the universe. Physicists, chemists, astronomers, earth scientists and biologists have been able to come to- gether to tackle such problems as how life began; whether life could exist on Mars, Europa or Titan; and what range of extreme environments micro-organisms may tolerate. So far, there has been little dialogue between cancer biologists and astrobiologists, but this is set to change.
