We record Limnonectes fastigatus for the first time from Vietnam based on a new amphibian collection from Chu Mom Ray National Park, Kon Tum province. Morphological characteristics of the specimens from Chu Mom Ray National Park resemble those of the type series from Cambodia.

The evolution of sex chromosomes has occurred many times in highly divergent taxa. The bulk of the research that has shaped our expectations for their evolutionary path has focused on model organisms that have older sex chromosomes; In these organisms, the two sex chromosomes are highly differentiated from each other in form and function.

The functional divergence of duplicate genes (ohnologues) retained from whole genome duplication (WGD) is thought to promote evolutionary diversification. However, species radiation and phenotypic diversification are often temporally separated from WGD.

Previous studies on the distribution of the Ahaetulla snake across Indonesia only focused on morphological characters without any molecular data. This study was aimed at analyzing phylogenetic relationships among the genus Ahaetulla in Indonesia based on partial mitochondrial DNA sequences of 16 specimens collected from the Sundaland and Lesser Sunda regions. The 12S-rDNA gene was PCR-amplified and sequenced to analyze phylogenetic relationships and to estimate the divergence time between the 2 Ahaetulla populations of the Sundaland and Lesser Sunda regions.

The Saxifragales is a morphologically and ecologically diverse clade of flowering plants with a cosmopolitan distribution. Although families and genera within the order exhibit classic biogeographical disjunctions, no studies to date have rigorously examined and described its historical biogeography. Here, we analyze the historical biogeography of Saxifragales by first generating a new chronogram for the order using a supermatrix approach, based on 61 loci from 251 representative members of Saxifragales.

Skeletonema species are prominent primary producers, some of which can also cause massive harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal waters under specific environmental conditions. Nevertheless, genomic information of Skeletonema species is currently limited, hindering advanced research on their role as primary producers and as HAB species. Mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) has been extensively used as “super barcode” in the phylogenetic analyses and comparative genomic analyses. However, of the 21 accepted Skeletonema species, full-length mtDNAs are currently available only for a single species, S.

Plant disease resistance (R) genes are evolving rapidly and play a critical role in the innate immune system of plants. The nucleotide binding sites-leucine rich repeat (NBS-LRR) genes are one of the largest classes in plant R genes. Previous studies have focused on the NBS-LRR genes from one or several species of different genera, and the sequenced genomes of the genus Fragaria offer the opportunity to study the evolutionary processes of these R genes among the closely related species.

Calanthe masuca and C. sinica are two genetically closely related species in Orchidaceae. C. masuca is widely distributed in Asia, whereas C. sinica is restricted to Yunnan and Guangxi Provinces in southwest China. Both play important roles in horticulture and are under the pressure of population decline.

Limited access to genetic information has greatly hindered our understanding of the molecular evolution, phylogeny, and differentiation time of subg. Amygdalus. This study reported complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequences of subg. Amygdalus, which further enriched the available valuable resources of complete cp genomes of higher plants and deepened our understanding of the divergence time and phylogenetic relationships of subg. Amygdalus.

Divergent genetic responses to the same environmental pressures may lead sympatric ecological speciation possible. Such speciation process possibly explains rapid sympatric speciation of island species.

Some Gynura species have been reported to be natural anti-diabetic plants. Improvement of their traits towards application relies on hybridization. Clearly, phylogenetic relationships could optimize compatible hybridizations.

Recent sequencing projects on early-diverging metazoans such as cnidarians, have unveiled a rich innate immunity gene repertoire; however, little is known about immunity gene regulation in the host’s early response against marine bacterial pathogens over time.

Homologous sex chromosomes can differentiate over time because recombination is suppressed in the region of the sex determining locus, leading to the accumulation of repeats, progressive loss of genes that lack differential influence on the sexes and sequence divergence on the hemizygous homolog.

Crape myrtles, belonging to the genus Lagerstroemia L., have beautiful paniculate inflorescences and are cultivated as important ornamental tree species for landscaping and gardening. However, the phylogenetic relationships within Lagerstroemia have remained unresolved likely caused by limited sampling and the insufficient number of informative sites used in previous studies.

Odorrana fengkaiensis was recorded for the first time from Vietnam based on a new amphibian collection from Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Bac Giang, Quang Ninh provinces. Sequences of the specimens from Vietnam were identical to those of the paratypes of O. fengkaiensis from China. In addition, O. trankieni was newly recorded from Hoa Binh and Bac Giang provinces, Northern Vietnam, including the first description of female individuals. Genetic divergence between O. trankieni from Vietnam and its sister species, O. nasuta from China, ranged from 1.42 to 2.66%.

Assembling genes from next-generation sequencing data is not only time consuming but computationally difficult, particularly for taxa without a closely related reference genome. Assembling even a draft genome using de novo approaches can take days, even on a powerful computer, and these assemblies typically require data from a variety of genomic libraries.
