Diversity of bee flora

Bees execute a special performance by pollinating several plant species. But the activity of honeybees depends on the bee flora availability and quantity and quality of nectar, pollen present in them. In the present study University of agricultural Sciences, Dharwad campus were surveyed to asses the diversity of bees’ flora from July 2019- March 2020 which is covered with Agro- horticultural crops, wild plants and trees.

Field investigations were carried out for four years from April, 2016 to March, 2020 to record the total bee flora and to identify the most important among them in Dhenkanal district of Mid- Central table land zone of Odisha. All plant species recorded under this study were found to provide either nectar or pollen or both to different species of bees.

The Asiatic honey bee, Apis cerana indica harvests pollen and nectar from the flowers and helps in pollination process. Bee pasturage in the location is essential for better management of the hives and improving the yield. Floral diversity in the Madurai region was studied which revealed that the flora was belonging to 76 families. Among them family Fabaceae contributed a maximum of 31 species (12.25%) followed by Asteraceae 6.72% with 17 flora, Caesalpiniaceae (5.53%) and Cucurbitaceae (4.74%).
