Dogs are one of the important asymptomatic carriers of antimicrobial resistant and potentially pathogenic strains of Salmonella. They can harbor large bacterial load in the intestines and mesenteric lymph nodes which can be shed in their feces with the possibility of transmission to humans.

Antimicrobial resistance and presence of zoonotic enteropathogens in shelter dogs pose a public health risk to shelter workers and potential adopters alike. In this study we investigated the prevalence of zoonotic bacterial pathogens and cephalosporin resistant (CefR ) enteric bacteria in the feces of apparently healthy shelter dogs in the Cumberland Gap Region (CGR) in the US states of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia.

Long-read sequencing in metagenomics facilitates the assembly of complete genomes out of complex microbial communities. These genomes include essential biologic information such as the ribosomal genes or the mobile genetic elements, which are usually missed with short-reads.

CPV-2 causes hemorrhagic gastroenteritis in dogs and spreads rapidly in both domestic as well as wild population of canines. The virus sheds in large numbers in the feces, so the present study was designed to detect CPV and to identify the prevailing antigenic types of CPV using molecular techniques from rectal swabs of affected dogs. The incidence of CPV was found to be 18% and 63% by PCR and NPCR respectively. The most prevailing antigenic type as detected by Real time PCR was found to be CPV-2a.

The potential for using dog feces and dog feces treated with the larvae of the Black Soldier Fly (Hermatia illucens) and Fruit Beetle (Pachnodia marginata peregrina) as a source of biodiesel was determined. It was shown that potential biodiesel precursors (mainly fatty acids) were present in the larvae themselves and in both raw dog feces and the feces treated with the two different larvae. While the addition of the larvae to dog feces did not increase the amount of fatty acids produced they did alter the lipid composition.
