Dolichos bean (Lablab purpureus L. Sweet)
-
The per se performance of two bi-parental crosses-derived determinate and indeterminate recombinant inbred lines (RILs) belonging to a range of maturity groups in dolichos bean were compared for eight quantitative traits. Based on days to 50% flowering, the HA 4 × CPI 31113 (HACPI 3)-derived RILs were classified into early and medium maturity groups, while HA 4 × CPI 60125 (HACPI 6)- derived RILs were classified into extra early, early, medium and late maturity groups.

Increased and continued use of the diverse genotypes is a prerequisite for developing and diversifying the genetic base of crop cultivars. DNA markers which are crop-stage nonspecific environmental neutral, easily assayable and amenable for automation are being used to assess the diversity of germplasm accessions and/or breeding lines. DNA markers also provide information on the population structure, allelic richness, and parameters that specify diversity among the genotypes to help breeders to choose those most appropriate for use in cultivar development.

Dolichos bean has evolved as a short-day photoperiod sensitive indeterminate crop, restricting its production only to short-day environments. Determinate photoperiod insensitive varieties enable round-the year-production of dolichos bean. Determinate varieties being short-duration fit into multiple cropping systems leading to sustainable agricultural production.

The recombinant inbred lines (RILs) serve as useful source of pure-lines with desired combination of traits. Also, the chances of recovering high-yielding genotypes from RIL population are higher than those recoverable from F2 populations handled through pedigree breeding. The 157 RILs derived from HACPI 3and 144 RILs derived from HACPI 6 and three check entries [HA 3, HA 4 and kadalavare] of dolichos bean were evaluated for six qualitative traits and nine quantitative traits at the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bengaluru, India, during 2014 and 2015 rainy seasons.
