  • Mycoplasma agalactiae, causing agent of contagious agalactia, infects domestic small ruminants such as sheep and goats but also wild Caprinae. M. agalactiae is highly contagious and transmitted through oral, respira‑ tory, and mammary routes spreading rapidly in an infected herd.

  • Sheep were among the first animals to be domesticated. They are raised all over the world and produce a major scale of animal-based protein for human consumption and play an important role in agricultural economy. Iran is one of the important locations for sheep genetic resources in the world.

  • The highly prolific breeds of domestic sheep (Ovis aries) are globally valuable genetic resources for sheep industry. Genetic, nutritional and other environmental factors affect prolificacy traits in sheep. To improve our knowledge of the sheep prolificacy traits, we conducted mRNA-miRNA integrated profiling of ovarian tissues from two pure breeds with large (Finnsheep) vs. small (Texel) litter sizes and their F1 crosses, half of which were fed a flushing diet.

  • One of the approaches to detect genetics variants affecting fitness traits is to identify their surrounding genomic signatures of past selection. With established methods for detecting selection signatures and the current and future availability of large datasets, such studies should have the power to not only detect these signatures but also to infer their selective histories. Domesticated animals offer a powerful model for these approaches as they adapted rapidly to environmental and human-mediated constraints in a relatively short time.

  • Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is an economically important viral pathogen of domestic and wild ruminants. Apart from cattle, small ruminants (goats and sheep) are also the susceptible hosts for BVDV. BVDV infection could interfere both of the innate and adaptive immunity of the host, while the genes and mechanisms responsible for these effects have not yet been fully understood.

  • Domestication and centuries of selective breeding have changed genomes of sheep breeds to respond to environmental challenges and human needs. The genomes of local breeds, therefore, are valuable sources of genomic variants to be used to understand mechanisms of response to adaptation and artificial selection.

  • Fat tail is a unique trait in sheep acquired during domestication. Several genomic analyses have been conducted in sheep breeds from limited geographic origins to identify the genetic factors underlying this trait. Nevertheless, these studies obtained different candidates. The results of these regional studies were easily biased by the breed structures.

  • The focus of this study was to evaluate the effects of temperature variations on the quality of sheep carcass. For this sheep carcasses were subjected to existing practices followed during transportation and storage was simulated under different commercial and domestic storage temperatures like room temperature (simulating the retail outlet), chiller, display cabinet (0-4 oC) and slushed ice packed in thermocol box and also determined the effect of ambient conditions prevailed on quality of sheep carcasses in retail outlets in Chennai.

  • Goats are earliest domesticated animals. Number of the individuals are maintained them either as a source of the income or as a hobby. Mostly goats are maintained as a source of the milk and were milked even before cows. Goat is also called as “Cow of poor man”. Many scientists focused on the functional properties of the goat milk along with sheep milk. It is concluded that, these milks have not only high nutritional value but also therapeutic value and dietary characteristics.

  • Bluetongue (BT) is an infectious, non-contagious disease of domestic and wild ruminants. Bluetongue virus (BTV) causes severe disease in sheep, which is transmitted by insect vector belonging to Culicoides spp. It is particularly a viral disease of sheep, occasionally affecting cattle, buffaloes, goats, camels and other wild ruminants. In present study, out of 382 sheep serum samples, 150 (39.26%) and 130 (34.03%) were positive respectively by c-ELISA and i-ELISA. On comparing relative sensitivity and specificity of i-ELISA to c-ELISA was 86.67 and 100.00 per cent, respectively.

  • The state of Jammu and Kashmir, a north temperate region of Indian subcontinent, is a rich source of indigenous germplasm. Owing to the rich biodiversity in terms of sheep, goat, camel, yak and poultry, the livestock activity has a contribution of about 11percent in the Gross Domestic Product of the state. It offers promising employment opportunities and handsome economic returns especially in rural mountainous areas of the state. The indigenous livestock populations are very well adapted to various challenges posed due to certain topographic, demographic and other factors.
