Dong Son culture

As a relic covered with special values, Dong Son ancient village (in Ham Rong ward, Thanh Hoa city) preserves cultural - historical imprints of the ages in Thanh Hoa. At present, Dong Son ancient village plays an important role in the development strategy of Thanh Hoa tourism.

Dong Son culture is the solid source and foundation of Dong Son vitality with abundant resources both in terms of the material and spiritual aspects. Archaeological documentation has proven that, after over 1,000 years of Northern (i.e. Chinese feudal states’) domination, the vitality of the culture did overcome the fierce challenges of history. Moreover, it also enriched its own resources, making use of the quintessence of the Chinese culture, and went on with incessant development.

The archaeological data have convincingly proved that the Dong Son (Đông Sơn) culture resulted from the indigenous development of the previous pre-Đông Sơn cultural systems in the basins of the Hồng, Mã and Cả rivers, closely associating people and ancient Vietnamese culture. The ethnological and linguistic data demonstrate the close relationship of language and culture between the Việt and Mường peoples, and other ethnic groups of Viet – Muong (Việt – Mường) language.

The Dong Son bronze jar (Đông Sơn bronze Thạp) is one of outstanding products that provide a clear illustration of material aspects of Dong Son culture. By now, bronze jars have been discovered mainly in vestiges and graves of Dong Son culture in North Vietnam. In addition, some bronze jars have been found in South China.

For the past 50 years, Vietnamese cultural archaeologist have set up Pre - Dong SonCultures on Northern Vietnam in the systems of Phung Nguyen - Dong Dau - Go Mun in the Red River basin, Con Chan Tien (Cồn Chân Tiên) - Bai Man (Bái Man) - Quy Chu (Quỳ Chử) in the Ma (Mã) River basin, and Den Doi (Đền Đồi) - Ru Cat (Rú Cật) - Ru Tran (Rú Trăn) on the Lam River basin. These systems are considered to be the direct and main origin of the Dong Son Culture.

The presence of four bronze drums and some bronze items of the Dong Son culture indicate that this area might have been part of the Tan Hung region in the period of Hung Kings - founders of the country. The authors have published the distinctive characteristics, artifacts, and dates of the Bronze Age sites in these three provinces to support research efforts by other domestic and foreign scientists.
