  • An interesting chasmophytic Teucrium specimen was collected from Siirt, SE Turkey. It was identified according to the Flora of Turkey as T. paederotoides but with some doubt about certain characters. It was identified as T. chasmophyticum without any doubt from Flora Iranica. Because of some indistinct points between these 2 taxa, the recently described taxon was re-evaluated.

  • The blending of fact and fancy which men call legend reached its fullest and richest expression in the golden age of Greece, and thus it is to Greek mythology that one must turn for the best form of any legend which foreshadows history. Yet the prevalence of legends regarding flight, existing in the records of practically every race, shows that this form of transit was a dream of many peoples--man always wanted to fly, and imagined means of flight. In this age of steel, a very great part of the inventive genius of man has gone into devices intended to facilitate transport, both of men and...

  • It is doubtful whether the survivor of any order of things finds compensation in the privilege, however undisputed by his contemporaries, of recording his memories of it. This is, in the first two or three instances, a pleasure. It is sweet to sit down, in the shade or by the fire, and recall names, looks, and tones from the past; and if the Absences thus entreated to become Presences are those of famous people, they lend to the fond historian a little of their lustre, in which he basks for the time with an agreeable sense of celebrity. But another time comes, and comes very...

  • It is a remarkable and at the same time a terrible and most lamentable fact, that the practice of medicine--an art of daily necessity and application, most nearly affecting the dearest interests and well being of mankind, and to the improvement of which we are encouraged and impelled by the strongest motives of interest and humanity, of love for our neighbor and emulous zeal for professional skill and superiority therein--should, after a probation of so long a period, and recorded experience of at least two thousand years, still remain, as it confessedly does in most respects, so little und...

  • Normal functioning of reproductive systems of male and female, no doubt is expected of all individuals. But one of the vagaries of nature is aberration of this function. While fertility is an essential ingredient for survival and continuity of species, not all couples are capable of furthering their families. So the problem of infertility finds its place in the recorded history of ancient civilisations of Babylonia, Persia and Greece.1 Goddesses of fertility, fertility rites, and superstitions encompassing the process of birth are mentioned in the history of these civilisations.

  • The castles of the great landowners have been so often described that there is no need to do this again. The popular idea of a baron of the Middle Ages is of a man who when he was not fighting was jousting or hunting. Such were, no doubt, his chief recreations; so fond was he of hunting, indeed, that his own broad lands were not enough, and he was a frequent trespasser on those of others; the records of the time are full of cases which show that poaching was quite a fashionable amusement among the upper classes. But...

  • Upon hearing that there is to be a book about discovery and exploration in the ancient world, many people express some surprise: “Were there explorers in the ancient world?” “What did they discover?” Such doubts are understandable because there are so many preconceptions and misconceptions about the nature of discovery and exploration. Although no single book can set the record straight for everyone, this volume— one in a set that will describe the entire history of the discovery and exploration of the world—should go a long way toward throwing light on this remote phase of history...

  • Paul McCartney turned 64 on June 18, 2006. He was only 16 when he wrote the lyrics for “When I’m 64”—recorded nine years later on the Beatles’ greatest album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Sir Paul still has a fi ne head of hair, and though we doubt he rolls in at “a quarter to three,” he has the energy and good looks of a much younger man. We suspect McCartney’s per- ception of older people has changed. According to an article in the New York Times, half of those over 64 consider themselves middle- aged or young. To be...
