This study aimed to investigate the possibility of degrading the pesticides of the BAC process. Based on the promising results in the full-scale reactor receiving river water, a lab-scale reactor was installed to study the pesticide removal mechanism and the contribution of nitrifying bacteria to the removal efficiency.

In Vietnam, there have been some studies on desalination but mostly on low and stable salinity and small-scale system. In fact, the salinity varies quite substantialy within seasons. Thus, the main objective of this study is therefore to evaluate the brackish water treatment capacity of different nanofiltration (NF) processes for domestic and drinking water supply for residential areas in Thu Bon river basin.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the technological feasibility of biological filtration process for Mn control in Lorne WTP. This thesis consists of eight chapters. Project background and research objectives are described in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 presents an extensive literature review covering the nature of manganese, manganese analytical methods, manganese control methods, the nature of MOB and biological control of Mn in drinking water treatment. The materials and methods used throughout the experimental investigation for this study are described in Chapter 3.

The rejects and membrane wash water were also treated in the bioreactor, resulted in complete removal of ClO4 ¯ through this approach. This is the first report where biotreatment is adopted as a pre- and post-treatment to membrane process for removing ClO4 ¯ , and this will find field application for treating ClO4 ¯ contaminated ground as well as surface water sources.

Pot and field trials were carried out using sediment dredged from the port of Bremen (Germany) and deposited in a settling basin near Bremen; the sediment is polluted with Cd and Zn. Five iron-bearing materials were added to the soil (1% pure Fe in soil dry matter) to immobilize the heavy metals: ‘Red mud from the aluminium industry, sludge from drinking-water treatment, bog iron ore, unused steel shot and steel shot waste.
