Drug utilisation study

After the SMART trial evaluating the safety of salmeterol (long-acting beta-2-agonist (LABA)) in asthma patients, regulatory actions were taken to promote a guideline-adherent prescribing of LABA only to patients receiving inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). We aim to analyse LABA- and ICS-related prescription patterns after the SMART trial in Germany.

Large differences exist in the prevalence rate of drugs prescribed to children and adolescents between and within countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate child and adolescent drug prescription patterns in Italy in an extra-hospital setting at the regional and Local Health Unit (LHU) levels.

Tuberculosis is a major public health problem and second largest cause of death among infectious diseases. Control of TB is hindered by the lack of a simple and effective diagnostic tool that can be utilised in resource limited settings. Molecular techniques using Real time PCR technology have gained momentum for rapid diagnosis and detection of drug resistance.

To describe the utilisation of antibiotics in children and adolescents across 5 European countries based on the same drug utilisation measures and age groups. Special attention was given to age-group-specific distributions of antibiotic subgroups, since comparison in this regard between countries is lacking so far.

Whilst it is acknowledged that Australians are world leaders in pasture based grazing systems (one of the lowest cost methods of feeding cows), research indicates that these systems combined with partial mixed rations (PMR) and a low level of concentrates will result in improved milk production and utilisation of pasture (Bargo, Muller, Delahoy, Cassidy 2002). The implementation of a pasture based grazing system in isolation will leave the cow with an effective shortage of energy due to relatively low total dietary intakes.
