Hypotension after neuraxial anaesthesia is one of the most common complications during caesarean section. Vasopressors are the most effective method to improve hypotension, but which of these drugs is best for caesarean section is not clear. We assessed the effects of vasopressors on the contractile response of uterine arteries and superior mesenteric arteries in pregnant rats to identify a drug that increases the blood pressure of the systemic circulation while minimally affecting the uterine and placental circulation.

Cancer treatment during pregnancy is a growing problem especially now that women delay childbearing. Systemic treatment of these malignancies during pregnancy centers mainly on the anticancer drugs anthracyclines, widely used in treating hematological and breast cancer during pregnancy and sometimes associated with early and late toxicity for the fetus.

(BQ) As dental professionals, our duty is to find ways to provide necessary dental care as safely as possible. Our ideal role is to work with a woman to help her get to a state of ideal oral health before she becomes pregnant. This way, the need for invasive treatments during pregnancy is minimized or prevented altogether. Researchers keep uncovering evidence that untreated oral disease has the potential to be detrimental to both the expectant mother and the baby.

Tetracycline was introduced in the middle of the twentieth century and was used widely for the relief of nausea associated with morning sickness. In 1963, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning against the use of tetracycline as an antibiot- ic for young children and pregnant women due to irreversible dental staining. Tetracycline affects the teeth during the formation period, ranging from the embryo in the second trimester of pregnancy to the eighth year of the child’s life.

Oxytocin is secreted naturally by the posterior pituitary—the back portion of a small gland at the brain’s base that produces hormones—during later pregnancy, labor, and when the baby breastfeeds. Synthetic forms of oxytocin are found in brand-name products as well as in generic form. In moderate doses, oxytocin produces slow, generalized contractions of the muscles in the uterus with full relaxation in between. When used for postpartum hemorrhage, oxytocin takes effect sooner than most other uterotonic drugs, including misoprostol.

Oral health professionals play a significant role in counseling patients concerning the harmful effects of tobacco, alcohol and recreational drugs. During the pregnancy, the consequences of these behaviors are profound. Multiple studies have demonstrated a clear association between maternal smoking and perinatal morbidity and mortality (6-10). Women who smoke are at increased risk for low birth weight babies, bleeding during pregnancy, premature labor and preterm rupture of membranes.

Yes. Local anesthetic with epinepherine can be used during pregnancy. Lidocaine with epinephrine is considered safe during pregnancy. Lidocaine (2%) is a category B drug in contrast to mepivicaine (3%) which is a category C drug. Lidocaine with epinephrine prolongs the length of anesthesia because the drug is absorbed slowly. There is a theoretical concern about the effect of epinephrine on uterine muscle. No scientific studies, however, could be found to confirm this effect in pregnant women.

The health of the mother has a profound effect on the health of her children. This effect is most noticeable during pregnancy but persists throughout the child’s life. I concentrate here on the impact of poverty and low income on the relationship between maternal health in pregnancy and during the early years of her child’s life and child health. Poverty in childhood exerts its effect throughout the life course and can be transmitted across generations. Inter- generational transmission occurs through maternal health and health-related behaviour before and during pregnancy.

Cardiac arrest is cessation of heart action. Ventricular standstill (asystole) and ventricular fibrillation are the immediate causes, but the underlying etiologies are most frequently acute myocardial hypoxia or alteration in conduction or both. In obstetrics and gynecology, cardiac arrest occurs during induction of anesthesia and during operative surgery or instrumented delivery. Cardiovascular disease increases the risk of cardiac arrest, and hypoxia and hypertension are contributory causes.
