In India, area under cultivation is about 159.7 million ha. 68% of the total net sown area comes under dry land cultivation, spread over 177 districts. As farmers turn increasingly to multiple cropping systems to boost their incomes and meet increased demand for their produce, the time available for seedbed preparation has decreased considerably.

Green fodder supplementation is the best way to reduce the cost of production in livestock farming. The expenditure on concentrate feed will be curtail by feeding of legume fodder. Urbanization reduces the land area for fodder production and also the failure in monsoon urges the farmers to go for fodder production under agroforestry models. Calopogonium mucunoides is a fodder legume with high quality protein and grows fast and remain productive during dry seasons.

Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) is a simple and low cost water saving technology for helping farmers to cope up with the increasing water scarcity in irrigated environment. Irrigation is regulated by intermittent flooding in rice field with the help of Pani Pipe (perforated field tube). The study was carried out in Puri District of Odisha to ascertain the constraints perceived by the farmers that inhibit the adoption of AWD technology. All the selected farmers involved in adoption of AWD were interviewed as respondents.

Study was conducted to evaluate soil fertility status in the four different tasar growing regions in Banka District of Bihar and Dumka District of Jharkhand. A total of 75 surface soil samples (0-30 cm) were collected from the fields of primary tasar food plants (Terminalia arjuna and T. tomentosa) along with the details regarding farmer’s name, land type, fertilizer details, geo location, etc. The collected samples were air dried, sieved and analyzed for various soil fertility parameters such as pH, EC, organic carbon, macro and micro nutrients etc.

Sprinkler irrigation is still in its infancy in India and there is a need to make it popular among the farmers. Even though there is a phenomenal growth in the area under sprinkler irrigation, a lot of work is still to be done to explain and convince the farmers, especially those in the dry land area about the high potentialities of this new system. The present study was conducted in Rakia block of Kandhamal district in Odisha, which was selected purposively. The data were collected through pre-tested schedule for 120 respondents selected randomly.

In India, grazing lands are around 12 million hectares which constituted the main grazing resources for the huge livestock population (512.05 million). But the productivity of the grazing lands is low due to over grazing and poor management. There is urgent need to improve the productivity of community grazing lands through sowing mixed stand of grasses and legume, increase grazing period and plantation of fodder trees on grazing lands. Korangadu pasture a private pasture land and a time tested model maintained by the farmers and it is the major source of feeding on zero budgets.

The present study was conducted in Ananthapur district of Andhra Pradesh to study the profile characteristics and Information Source Utilization Pattern of rain fed groundnut farmers. Ananathapur farmers are largely dependent on drought-prone, rain-fed agriculture; and mostly a single crop of groundnut is sown in about 8 lakh ha under such harsh and agro climatic conditions. Of its geographical area of 19, 13,000 ha, (largest in AP) 10, 00,000 ha are rain-fed. The present state of A.P has totally about 40 lakh ha under rain fed cultivation and 25% of it is in Ananathapur district.

Dry land agriculture plays an important role in the progress of Indian agriculture. The farmers are struggling to maintain timeliness in different unit operations of groundnut to take advantage of favorable situation in dry land conditions of Andhra Pradesh state. It is observed that the yields are expected to decrease by 10-15 per cent, if sowing is delayed by one week, under rain-fed situation.

The study was conducted at farmer field of Sri Brijraj Singh village Titihara of Karwi block in Chitrakoot district during the year 2016-17, to study the effect of soil test crop response technology on yield and economics of Chick pea. The yield of Chick pea 13.55 q/ha achieved with application of N: P: K as 19:16:13 along with 5.5 t/ha farm yard manure (FYM) and yield of 17.86 q/ha is achieved with application of N: P: K as 40:29:26 along with 5.5 t/ha farm yard manure (FYM). Cultivation of Chick pea under farmers condition B: C ratio is 1.58, under general recommendation of agriculture.

The study mainly focused on the water harvesting structures adopted by farmers in dry land areas of Tamil Nadu. The study was conducted in four districts of Tamil Nadu such as Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai and Madurai based on the maximum area under dry lands condition. In these locale, the villages were selected by appraisal of several indicators namely rainfall, climate conditions, livelihood analysis and overall agriculture development. Participatory Rural Appraisal methodology was adopted to identify and gather information about the water harvesting practices for water saving.

Sowing of seeds with seed drill at proper seed rate, depth and covering them with soil is very important. This allows plants to get sufficient sunlight and nutrients from the soil and also saves them from being eaten by birds or being dried up due to exposure to sun. Meanwhile it ensures improved ratio of crop yield with saving in time and labour. Small land holding in Indian farms limits farm mechanization on Indian farms. Conventional methods of seeding will results in low seed placements, less area covered per unit time, physical health issue like back ache etc.

Rainfed agriculture is widely practiced in Agra district due to high dependency on rainfall. The productivity of dry land crops is very low. On farm trials were conducted to evaluate improved water management practices. Higher crop yield were obtained by adopting various water management techniques for different crops in comparison to farmer’s practice. Improved water management practices resulted in overall increase in crop yield as well as net returns and B:C ratio.

The study was conducted in Shorapur and Yadagir taluks of Yadagir district on impact of JG-11 bengal gram on farmers revealed that majority of the JG-11 growers expressed that the characteristics namely; bold grains, higher flowering and seed setting, resistance to wilt, comes up well in dry land and high yielding capacity as positive ones. The major negative characters of JG-11 were single seed pod and shrivelled pods. The practices namely foliar application of urea, use of growth promoter after 35 days (NAA) was followed by only 15.00% of farmers.

The work of the dry-farmer is only half done when the soil has been properly prepared, by deep plowing, cultivation, fallowing, for the planting of the crop. The choice of the crop, its proper seeding, and its correct care and harvesting are as important as rational soil treatment in the successful pursuit of dry-farming. It is true that in general the kinds of crops ordinarily cultivated in humid regions are grown also on arid lands, but varieties especially adapted to the prevailing dry-farm conditions must be used if any certainty of harvest is desired. Plants possess a marvelous power...

Changing climate and rainfall patterns are expected to have significant impacts on agricultural productivity, especially in arid and semi‐arid regions that are already marginal for agriculture. Most climate modeling scenarios indicate that the dry lands of West and Central Asia and North Africa, for instance, will be severely affected by droughts and high temperatures in the years to come. This could lead to land degradation and agricultural expansion.
