This study was taken to know the weed control efficiency of herbicides in chickpea intercropping with lentil. The weed competition was highest during 30 DAS and the maximum weed density was found in 60 and 90 DAS. Weed species were recorded such as broadleaf weeds like Coronopus didymus, Chenopodium album, Melilotus officinalis, Phalaris minor, etc. The main focus of this experiment was to study dry matter accumulation by weeds at different days after sowing (30, 60, 90, and 120).

The present study was undertaken during 2013-14 and 2014-15 at Chaudhary Charan Singh research farm Hisar, to find out the effect of date of sowing and nitrogen levels on growth, yield, nitrogen uptake and nutrient use efficiencies in western Haryana. The results revealed that plant height, dry matter accumulation, Siliquae per plant, number of seeds of siliqua and 1000 seed weight decreased with each delay in sowing. The seed yield decreased by 39.8 and 38.7 % over November 15, 24.2 and 24.5% over November 5, 6.89 and 7.

The experimental soil was clay in texture, slightly alkaline in reaction, medium in available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The results revealed that seed rate of 45kg/ha recorded maximum dry matter accumulation at 40 DAS and at harvest. The percent increase in green and dry fodder yield of this seed rate over seed rate of 30 and 35 kg/ha were 14.21, 21.91 and 7.41, 11.02 respectively. Seed rate of 45kg/ha recorded significantly higher N and P uptake over 40, 35 and 30 seed rate/ha but N and P content did not influence significantly by increased seed rate.

Nitrogen management strategies developed so far are mainly based on soil tests targeted yield and generally N recommendations are made for large areas which certainly do not take into account the field to field and season to season variability. Nitrogen being the most dynamic nutrient, we have to develop real time N management strategies which are meant by applying the N doses to the crop as and when needed.
