Dried distillers’ grain (DDG) from rice-based alcohol factories contains relatively high protein (ca. 79% of dry matter). However, this vegetative protein source has only been used for animal feeding. To enhance the value of this by-product, i.e. toward application for the food industry, this study has applied different approaches for the enrichment of protein content in this by-products.

PCA revealed overall acceptability, taste and colour as the top three sensory components contributing to variation in the gari samples. Root size negatively correlated with dry matter, starch content and gari yield. It was concluded that the various cassava varieties exhibited some distinct morpholgical and chemical characteristics which influenced their potentials for gari production.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different drying methods on the nutritional content and antioxidant activity of purslane. Two different purslane samples have been dried using four different methods (sun, vacuum, hot air, and freeze drying). Dried and fresh samples were analyzed for their dry matter, β-carotene content, chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b contents, total flavonoid content, total flavonol content, total phenolic content, %DPPH radical scavenge activity, metal chelating activity, and color.

The main findings of the study were that (i) gas production and methane content of the gas were reduced when ensiled cassava root replaced the dried cassava root as a carbohydrate source, and when cassava leaf meal replaced water spinach meal as a protein source; (ii) Adding brewers’ grains at 5% dry matter (DM) to the diet of ensiled cassava root supplemented with either cassava foliage or water spinach as the main protein source increased DM feed intake...

The aims were to evaluate the impact of organic, conventional and traditional production systems on yield, proximate composition and mineral content of tubers and soil physico-chemical and biological properties in greater yam (Dioscorea alata). Organic farming (35.14 t ha-1 ) produced significantly higher yield over conventional practice (28.17 t ha-1 ) by 24%. A net profit of Rs 3,16,534 ha-1 , which was 38% higher over chemical based farming was obtained under organic management in greater yam Tuber quality was improved with slightly higher dry matter, starch and crude protein contents.

The production potential of root vegetables depends on many factors, amongst them; plant growth regulators appreciably influence the growth, yield and quality of produce. They play an important role in producing high value root vegetables and increasing the yield. They promote root growth, increase the number of flowers, fruit size and induce early and uniform fruit ripening. Foliar application of plant growth regulators is reported to improve tuber yield, dry matter and quality characters like starch, total sugars and beta carotene content.

Mulberry leaves contains (g kg-1 on dry matter basis) 163 g kg-1 ash, 201 g kg-1 crude protein, 120g kg-1 crude fibre and chemical analysis indicated highest crude protein and the lowest non digestive factor contents (22.3 and 31.1% dry matter, respectively) among the four forages tested. The caloric values were calculated as 241.05 Kcal./100g.

The experimental soil was clay in texture, slightly alkaline in reaction, medium in available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The results revealed that seed rate of 45kg/ha recorded maximum dry matter accumulation at 40 DAS and at harvest. The percent increase in green and dry fodder yield of this seed rate over seed rate of 30 and 35 kg/ha were 14.21, 21.91 and 7.41, 11.02 respectively. Seed rate of 45kg/ha recorded significantly higher N and P uptake over 40, 35 and 30 seed rate/ha but N and P content did not influence significantly by increased seed rate.

In a pot culture experiment, the response of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), cv. Contender to phosphorus (P) was studied on 20 acidic paddy soils of Thoubal district, Manipur. All the collected soil samples were acidic in reaction varied from 4.61 to 6.26 with mean value of 5.48, organic carbon content 9.9 to 24.1 g kg-1 , CEC 9.21 to 35.71 [cmol (p+ )kg-1 ] and clay content ranged from 24.78 to 73.38 per cent. Addition of P fertilizer in the soils significantly increased the dry matter production and P uptake by the crop.

Use of nitrogen fixing and phosphate solubilizing microorganisms (biofertilizers) has become an important aspect of pulse crops production technology. The efficiency of these microorganisms differs widely in accruing the benefits of their application in crops. Ten Mesorhizobium isolates having various plant growth promoting (PGP) traits including phosphate solubilization were screened for their symbiotic efficiency in terms of root nodulation, plant dry matter production, nitrogen and phosphorus content and nitrogen fixation by chickpea plant in a field experiment during 2015-16.

The current work aims to assess response of ber cultivars to different level of salinity. The salinity level (0, 4.0, 8.0, 12.0, 16.0 dSm-1 ECe) had detrimental effects on growth and mineral composition of transplanted six ber cultivars. High levels of salts tolerated by most of the varieties but severely limit plant growth. High soil salinity decreased the growth (plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves per plant and dry matter yield) and mineral composition of leaves above conductivity of 12 dSm-1 ECe.
