  • Button mushrooms are highly perishable in nature because of its high moisture content about (85-90%) hence starts deteriorating immediately within a day after harvest. So as to increase its shelf life three different samples of Button Mushroom Slices viz. untreated, blanched and optimized osmosed samples were taken for drying experiment at each level of drying air temperature (50, 60 and 70oC). Drying of osmosed Button Mushroom slices at 70oC drying air temperature provided shortest drying time to produce best quality dried product as compared to blanched and untreated Button Mushroom samples.

  • This paper aims to quantify the amount of water surface evaporation with special regard to the EWM evaporation pan and to relate the direct measurements to the Penman and other empirical equations. Based on the available 10-minute interval data on the EWM pan evaporation and the data on precipitation for the same intervals, the net water surface evaporation was estimated for the period from July 2010 to October 2012 (excluding the time EWM pan did not function in winter).

  • Pointed gourd (Trichosanthes dioica) is an important vegetable available seasonally. Pointed gourd slices were dried after pre-treatment using a tray dryer. To accomplish this process, raw, osmosed and blanched slices of pointed gourd were subjected to the drying air temperature of 50, 60 and 70oC in a tray dryer. The drying time of osmosed sample was reduced to 480 minutes as compared to 600 and 840 minutes taken by blanched and raw pointed gourd samples.

  • Kerala is the region with high humidity and comparatively low solar radiation, there is much scope of uneven and uncontrolled drying of copra. Hence, an attempt was made to develop a sophisticated and advanced forced convection solar dryer. Evacuated tube collector (ETC) was used to generate hot air and used to dry coconuts. It consists of three units: evacuated tube collector, blower and drying chamber. Coconuts (Cocos nucifera) were dried at full load condition in order to evaluate the performance of the developed solar dryer.

  • Drying kinetics of amla- beet root shreds in tray dryer was studied at 55, 65 and 75oC air temperatures. Drying of shreds occurred completely in falling rate period. Four thin layer drying models were fitted to the experimental moisture ratio data. Among the mathematical models investigated, the logarithmic model satisfactorily described the drying behaviour of shreds with high r2 values.

  • This study investigates the effect of various types of pre-treatments in drying behaviour and quality of slices green mangos in convective drying. This experimental study was carried out with a constant air velocity and thickness (3±0.5 X 103 m) of „dasheri” variety of mangoes, having Julian shape in a laboratory scale dryer at 50, 60 and 70˚C drying air temperatures. Five chemical and one moist heat pre-treatment was done prior to drying to analyse the effect on drying behaviour and quality of final product (aamchur). Dried samples were evaluated for sensory and quality attributes.

Three different samples of Green Peas with respect to pre-treatments viz. raw, blanched and blanched after pricking were taken for drying experiment. A laboratory model tray dryer was used for drying green peas with different levels of drying air temperatures (50° , 60° , 70°C). The moisture content of green peas decreases an elapsed drying time during tray drying of green peas. The result shows that the blanched green peas had slightly higher moisture content than raw and pricked green peas.
