This report studies the impact of externally bonded WRGFRP and UDCGFRP laminates on the test column strength, deformation and ductility to investigate the GFRP laminates composite action at various load levels and comprehend the cracking and failure mechanisms involved.

While a freestanding high-strength sheet metal subject to tension will rupture at a small strain, it is anticipated that lamination with a ductile sheet metal will retard this instability to an extent that depends on the relative thickness, the relative stiffness, and the hardening exponent of the ductile sheet. In this paper, the Dung’s microscopic damage model which depicts void growth under plastic deformation is applied to predict ductile fractures in high strength steel API X65. The model is implemented as a vectorized userdefined material subroutine (VUMAT) in the ABAQUS/Explicit commercial finite element code.

When the grain size is reduced to that of nanometres, the activity of dislocations as the source of the material ductility is restricted.
