  • In field pea germplasm a wide range of genetic variability is present for various morphological traits; In this regard, present genotypes were dimly characterized for these morphological descriptors to establish DUS. DUS test is important so that new varieties can achieve legal access to their market or their protection under PPV&FR Act, 2001. The present paper focuses on DUS characterization for 126 genotypes of field pea with diverse origin including four checks viz., HFP 8909, HFP 715, HFP 529 and HFP 9426 grown in Augmented Design. The study was carried out during Rabi season 2018-19.

  • Forty eight mungbean genotypes collected from different parts of the country were morphologically characterized using PPV & FRA descriptors. The descriptors, plant habit, time of flowering, stem pubescence and pod pubescence, showed no variation among the genotypes in the studied 26 descriptors.

  • A hundred landraces of rice (Oryza sativa L.), from core group genotypes collected from different parts of Chhattisgarh, were characterized following the guidelines from the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority, GOI. Hundred rice accessions were planted in a randomized block design (RBD).

  • Studies were carried out on mango varieties developed at Horticulture Garden, BAU Sabour to develop and document descriptors, during 2016-2017. The experiment was laid out in row column design with three replications having 24 varieties as treatments. Observations were recorded on various morphological parameters such as qualitative characters. From the observations made it was found that the mango varieties expressed the morphological variations from genotype to genotype. These morphological variations have the ability to distinguish between the mango varieties with each other.

  • A total of 75 sorghum germplasm lines including 74 Indigenous cultivar (IC) and one Exotic cultivar (EC) were characterized using 27 morphological descriptors provided by PPV & FRA for DUS testing in sorghum. Results revealed that maximum variation was present among genotypes for glume traits viz., colour (6 groups), neck of panicle (5 groups), length for flower with pedicel (5 groups), time of panicle emergence (4 groups), colour of dry anther (4 groups), panicle length of branches (4 groups), panicle shape (4 groups) and caryopsis colour (4 groups).

  • Plant genetic resources are the bed rock of any crop improvement programme. Applied breeding programme emphasizes selection within elite germplasm sources to enhance the opportunities of developing genotypes superior to those currently available. Indigenous as well as exotic germplasm constitute important resources for addressing serious breeding issues, viz. increasing genetic variability, improving the derived populations for specific traits especially biotic and abiotic stresses or even yield, enhancing quality and eventually broadening the genetic base of present-day cultivars.

  • The preset investigation was consisted of evaluation of 92 finger millet accessions for qualitative morphological descriptors at Pantnagar Centre for Plant Genetic Resource, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. Observations were recorded for sixteen qualitative characters on visual basis at different stages of development, as per DUS guidelines standardized by PPV&FR. Out of 92 accessions, most of the accessions exhibited erect growth (50 %), droopy ears (27.14%), dark green glume (58.70 %), non-pigmented leaf juncture (67.30 %), non-pubescent leaf sheath (33.

  • The aim of the present study is to characterize Seven hundred and twenty accessions of Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) along with two National check varieties viz., GT-10, TKG22 and local check variety DS-5 were characterized based on the DUS descriptors. The experiment was executed in Augmented Block Design without replication at All India Coordinated Research Project on Sesame and Network on Niger experimental plot, Main Agricultural Research Station, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, Karnataka during kharif 2016.

  • Character association and path analysis studies were investigated in 2016-2017 and 2017- 2018 in all physical and rhizome characters of ginger to find out the influence of characters among themselves on yield. Characters were investigated according to the DUS descriptors as described by Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode, Kerala. Number of leaves had the highest positive direct effect (1.759) on yield followed by number of shoots (1.053) and rhizome thickness (0.460).

  • In the present study, 50 germplasm accessions of foxtail millet [Setaria italica (L.) Beauv.] were evaluated based on DUS descriptors for six morphological (qualitative) traits viz., plant growth habit, plant pigmentation at auricle, inflorescence shape, inflorescence compactness, lobe compactness, seed colour and six quantitative characters viz., flag leaf: blade length (cm), flag leaf: blade width (cm), peduncle length (cm), peduncle exertion, panicle length (cm) and plant height at maturity (cm).
