Comprehensive data are needed to evaluate the burden of low birthweight. Analysis of routine data on health-care utilization during early childhood were used to test the hypothesis that infants with low birthweight have (i) increased inpatient health-care utilization, (ii) higher hospital costs and (iii) different morbidity pattern in early childhood when compared with normal birthweight infants.

India still has the highest number of under-weight children under five in the world and 70 per cent of children are anemic. The link between malnutrition and infant feeding has been well established. Poor feeding practices in infant and early childhood resulting in malnutrition contribute to impaired cognitive and social development, poor school performance and reduced productivity in later life. A mother is the principle provider of the primary care that her child needs during the first five years of life.

It was in the early nineties that the CBS established a separate Household Survey Section (HSS). This section initiated four small-scale surveys with funding from the GoN. Then a comprehensive survey for Nepal was launched by the CBS in 1995/96 through its multi-topic (consumption, income, housing, labor markets, education, health etc.) national household survey called the Nepal Living Standards Survey (NLSS I) with financial assistance from the World Bank.

We have been able to develop 23 Regional Cancer Centres and several Oncology Wings in India, which provide comprehensive cancer care services. One of the major limitations of the programme is the late stage at presentation of common cancers thus reducing the chances of survival. There is a need to increase awareness among the community regarding prevention and early detection of cancers. The programme is developing IEC materials for the same.

Parents and children need a framework for care which provides continuity from pre-pregnancy, through pregnancy and childbirth, to the early years of life. A comprehensive approach to early life is needed which builds on existing programmes to ensure our children get the best start in life8. Developing a common vision and a comprehensive approach to addressing children’s social, emotional and behavioral health needs is an integral part of child and adolescent health and health care. Policymakers can promote policies that call for a comprehensive state plan, interagency strategies and coordinated investments to support early social and emotional development. By integrating social and emotional development into existing programs and services, policymakers support efforts to comprehensively address the mental health needs of children and their families.
