The paper "Geospatial overview of the vegetation environment suggested by community level place names in the area of Northeastern Thailand and Northern Cambodia" details the frequency and distribution of place names that feature vegetationderived terms in North-Eastern Thailand and Northern Cambodia. Data, inclusive of word meanings, is currently being organized in these targeted areas. The analysis shows that the interpretation and spatial pattern of these place names, especially the early ones, may provide important information about the vegetative setting of these communities.

The spotted-wing Drosophila (Drosophila suzukii) is a widespread invasive pest that causes severe economic damage to fruit crops. The early development of D. suzukii is similar to that of other Drosophilids, but the roles of individual genes must be confirmed experimentally. Cellularization genes coordinate the onset of cell division as soon as the invagination of membranes starts around the nuclei in the syncytial blastoderm.

Fruit abortion is a major limiting factor for fruit production. In flat peach, fruit abortion is present in the whole tree of some accessions during early fruit development. However, the physiological factors and genetic mechanism underlying flat fruit abortion remain largely elusive.

Global warming will expand the range of new and invasive pathogens in orchards, and subsequently increase the risk of disease epidemics and economic losses. The development of new resistant plant varieties can help to reduce the impact of pathogens, however, the breeding speed can be extremely slow, due to the growth rates of the plants, and the availability of resistance genes.

In tomato, different growth regulators play a pivotal role in germination, root development, branching, flower initiation, fruiting, lycopene development, synchronization and early maturation, parthenocarpic fruit development, ripening, TSS, acidity, seed production etcetera. To boost the tomato production in India these versatile resources greatly help the professionals and researchers. By keeping the importance of growth regulator in tomato production this review paper is scripted.

The basic and strategic research programs in litchi aim at developing technologies for enhancing productivity, quality, facilitating processing and value addition for increased net returns. The present literature has been, therefore, reviewed to clear the concepts and approaches involving the use of PGRs paving way for future litchi production. Physiological changes such as heavy fruit drop or early abscission in litchi might be due to the lack of hormones needed for the embryo and fruit development, lack of pollination and/or fertilization etc.

In the recent time, pumpkin has got industrial importance with the development of pulp powder as a nutraceutical supplement to Vitamin A requirement. Pumpkin is cheaper source of Vitamin A when compared to carrot which necessitates specific climatic requirement for its production and high productivity per unit area. An experiment was conducted at the Department of Vegetable Crops, Horticulture College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore to find out suitable pumpkin genotype for earliness, high yield and quality.

The present study was carried out on heterosis for fruit yield and yield related traits in sponge gourd. Fifteen hybrids of sponge gourd were developed using six parents in half diallel fashion were studied for estimation of heterosis for 10 yield contributing traits. Hybrids PSG-82 × PSG-07-04, PSG-07-04 × PSG-161 and PSG-07-04 × PSG-199 were found most promising for earliness and yield. These hybrids exhibited heterosis to the tune of 59.36, 48.45 and 43.85 per cent over their better parents and 81.58, 69.16 and 63.

The development of fruits without fertilization is known as parthenocarpy. Parthenocarpy improves the fruit quality, processing attributes, production and productivity of vegetable crops like tomato, cucumber, watermelon etc. Absence of seeds can enhances the shelf life of the fruits, allowing a better conservation, fruit set in adverse climatic conditions, early and offseason production of vegetable crops. Therefore, it is important to ensure yield stability regardless of environmental conditions.

Being early ripening, low chill plums grown in Indian sub-tropics have the potential for production of quality fruits and plum growing in the plains can be made successful venture by evolving improved varieties. Bearing habit, flower bud development and flower morphology, time and duration of flowering, anthesis, dehiscence, pollen studies (pollen viability and germinabitily) were studied in six varieties. Alu Bokhara Amritsari produced flowers on spurs.

Cytokinins are known to play an important role in fruit set and early fruit growth, but their involvement in later stages of fruit development is less well understood. Recent reports of greatly increased cytokinin concentrations in the flesh of ripening kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa (A. Chev.) C.F. Liang & A.R. Ferguson) and grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) have suggested that these hormones are implicated in the control of ripening-related processes.

The importance of viruses and related pathogens on the quality of planting material is largely recognised as a major component in a certification protocol aimed at developing ‘Clean Stock’ programme. Since majority of the viruses associated with temperate fruits are of latent nature, the significance of a quick and reliable method for early detection of these viruses is of paramount importance.

The mechanism of graft incompatibility is not yet fully understood and many reports focus on this problem in order to understand the mechanisms of graft development. Graft incompatibility is reported due to the Structural or Anatomical reasons, physiological and biochemical reasons, nutritional deficiency and presence of viruses at an early phase in response to grafting, as well as the consequences of these events on the future graft response.

The present study was carried out for development of hybrids in sponge gourd for earliness and yield traits. Twenty eight crosses were developed by crossing 8 × 8 diallel mating design (excluding reciprocal). Evaluated the crosses and along with their parents in randomized block design (RBD). Analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences for growth, earliness and yields characters, which suggesting presence of wide genetic variability. The magnitude of standard heterosis was found in desirable direction for early and yield traits viz.

Tomato grown during the main season (winter) causes a glut of produce in the market and its sale price is also very low. But the crop grown in rainy season has a better demand and is much remunerative for the farmer. Therefore, the present experiment was undertaken to develop and identify tomato hybrids well adapted to the rainy season. The experiment was conducted at the All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Vegetable Crops, Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar.
