Sigmoid volvulus in pregnancy is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction with high maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality if not diagnosed and managed early. Early diagnosis and management can prevent adverse effects such as bowel ischemia and preterm labor. Because classic clinical and radiological features may not be evident, high degree of suspicion is warranted.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an autosomal recessive disease that belongs to a group of disorders resulting from inborn errors of protein metabolism. It was the first disease included in neonatal screening. Neonatal screening has allowed an early diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Uterine rupture is a rare complication that can occur in the first trimester of pregnancy. It can lead to serious maternal morbidity or mortality, which is mostly due to catastrophic bleeding. First-trimester uterine rupture is rare; hence, diagnosis can be challenging as it may be confused with other causes of early pregnancy bleeding such as an ectopic pregnancy.

Brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare congenital developmental vascular lesions, and often presents with symptoms upon rupture. The controversy exists as to whether pregnancy confers an increased risk of intracranial hemorrhage. The diagnosis of brain AVMs, in the absence of brain imaging, is challenging in resource-limited settings, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common human bacterial infection in the community as well as in hospital settings (Vijaya Swetha et al., 2014). Urinary tract infection during pregnancy may cause complications such as pyelonephritis, hypertensive disease of pregnancy, anaemia, chronic renal failure, premature delivery and foetal mortality (Moyo et al., 2010).

Early pregnancy diagnosis plays a key role for profitable and sustainable animal husbandry practices especially in the productive animal species like cattle and buffaloes. In this context, a study was undertaken to assess the utility of seed germination inhibition technique (Punyakoti test) for early detection of pregnancy in buffaloes. Thirty nondescript buffaloes were randomly selected from the different villages of Bangalore Rural district.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most prevalent congenital malformation affecting 1 in 100 newborns. While advances in early diagnosis and postnatal management have increased survival in CHD children, worrying long-term outcomes, particularly neurodevelopmental disability, have emerged as a key prognostic factor in the counseling of these pregnancies.

Ultrasound techniques are becoming increasingly important in animal reproduction, offering both a mean of diagnosis and a useful therapeutic tool. Accordingly, understanding the use of ultrasound technology is critical in contemporary animal sciences, since ultrasound examinations are now a routine component of diagnostic workups in reproduction.

Cervical cancer, caused by sexually-acquired infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), continues to be a public health problem worldwide as it claims the lives of more than 270,000 women every year. In high-income countries early diagnosis and treatment of precancerous lesions has led to a significant reduction in the burden of disease. Because of poor access to high quality screening and treatment services the majority of cervical cancer deaths (85%) occur in women living in low- and middle-income countries.

Specific micronutrient deficiencies may affect maternal and foetal health. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy may cause foetal brain damage and mental retardation in infants. Vitamin A deficiency increases the risk in pregnant women of infection and anaemia, may cause blindness during pregnancy and early lactation, and has been associated to an elevated risk of HIV mother-to-child transmission. Folate deficiency may cause severe foetal neural tube defects like anencephaly and spina bifida.

The health of the mother has a profound effect on the health of her children. This effect is most noticeable during pregnancy but persists throughout the child’s life. I concentrate here on the impact of poverty and low income on the relationship between maternal health in pregnancy and during the early years of her child’s life and child health. Poverty in childhood exerts its effect throughout the life course and can be transmitted across generations. Inter- generational transmission occurs through maternal health and health-related behaviour before and during pregnancy.

The correct early diagnosis of pregnancy is often urgent. For example, a diagnosis is essential to institute studies or treatment of problems that may jeopardize the life or health of mother or offspring. Today this is usually accomplished by early beta-subunit hCG testing or ultrasonic scanning because a definite clinical diagnosis of pregnancy before the second missed period is possible in only about two thirds of patients. However, the practitioner must be familiar with the signs and symptoms of pregnancy to properly test for and treat the early pregnancy. ...
