In the mid-nineteenth century, British researchers treated various clays with ammonium sulfate or carbonate in solution to release calcium. In the early twentieth century, zeolite columns were used to remove interfering calcium and magnesium ions from solutions to permit determination of sulfate. Ionic separation procedures were used in the Manhattan project to purify and concentrate radioactive materials needed to make atom bombs.

  • In 1961, Baker, Gammel and Wills conjectured that for functions f meromorphic in the unit ball, a subsequence of its diagonal Pad´ approximants e converges uniformly in compact subsets of the ball omitting poles of f . There is also apparently a cruder version of the conjecture due to Pad´ himself, going e back to the early twentieth century. We show here that for carefully chosen q on the unit circle, the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction 1+ qz| q 2 z| q 3 z| + + + ··· |1 |1 |1 provides a counterexample to the conjecture. We also highlight some...

By the Second World War, technology began to be integrated into combat. The invention of radar and sonar extended the field of combat to greater and greater ranges, and it was no longer necessary to sight targets directly. As technology progressed, the very nature of weapons also changed. Now, it is no longer sufficient to discuss individual pieces of weaponry, they must be taken in the context of...

  • Lewis Thomas, in his semi-autobiographical book The Youngest Science: Notes of a Medicine-Watcher, reminisced about his father, an internist in the early twentieth century who would sit by his patient, holding his hand while nature affected the cure. There was little else he could offer. Now, after almost 100 years, we have crossed vast frontiers in medicine, from hormones to the immune system to unlocking the promise of genomics. We have relegated diseases such as erythroblastosis to the history books and transformed AIDS from a death sentence to a chronic illness.

Since then— in between other research projects, a marriage, and two children—I have periodically returned to a study of the history of US shopfloor governance....
