Methylobacterium as a ubiquitous symbiont in phylloplane and its influence on crop growth at various stages. This Pink-pigmented facultative methylotrophic bacteria (PPFMs) strains isolated from the phylloplane of Echinochloa frumentacea. A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of Methylobacterium with combination of treatments viz., seed imbibition, soil application and phyllosphere spray in kudiraivali under dryland conditions. This treatment was imposed at 30 and 60 days after sowing.

Iron is one of the essential mineral for all organisms and its deficiency leads to many serious problems in human being worldwide. Plants have evolved with specific ZIP transporters to uptake and transport the iron from the soil. IRT2 is one of the ZIPs family members, which has a role in uptake of Fe2+ from the soil. Indian barnyard millet (E. frumentacea L.) is one of the rich sources of iron among millets. IRT2 gene of Indian barnyard millet is up regulated under iron deficient condition and hence we isolated EfIRT2 gene.

A field study was carried out involving three F2 and F3 population of barnyard millet crosses during 2016-2017. The high PCV and GCV values and high heritability were noticed in F2 population of three crosses for number of tillers, iron and zinc content, indicated the predominance of additive gene effects in their expression and would respond to selection effectively as they are least influenced by environment.

A study was conducted to evaluate the potential of fluorescent Pseudomonas isolates against important endemic diseases of barnyard millet. A total of ten pseudomonad isolates, collected from rhizospheric soil samples of barnyard millet, were studied, out of which three fluorescent Pseudomonas isolates (UUHF Psf- 1, UUHF Psf-2 and UUHF Psf4) were selected for testing under heterogeneous field conditions on the basis of their in vitro performance against the conducted biocontrol traits viz., Phosphate solubilzation test Siderophore production test and HCN production test.

Field experiment was carried out to assess suitable spacing and weed management practices under rainfed condition that can suppress weeds and enhance the growth of Barnyard millet (Echinochloa frumentaceae) during Rabi season of 2018 at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Killikulam, Tamil Nadu. Weed flora observed in experimental field consists of Echionocloacolonum under grasses, Cyperus rotundus under sedges and Amaranthus viridis, Boerhavia diffusa, Cleome viscosa, Commelina bengalensis, Phyllanthus niruri under Broad leaved weeds.
