  • Ebook "Ecological systems: Selected entries from the encyclopedia of sustainability science and technology" provides comprehensive coverage of the scientific and engineering basis of the systems ecology of the earth in 15 detailed, peer-reviewed entries written for a broad audience of undergraduate and graduate students as well as practicing professionals in government, academia, and industry. The methodology presented aims at identifying key interactions and environmental effects, and enabling a systems-level understanding even with our present state of factual knowledge.

  • The Tibetan poplar (Populus szechuanica var. tibetica Schneid), which is distributed at altitudes of 2,000-4,500 m above sea level, is an ecologically important species of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and adjacent areas. However, the genetic adaptations responsible for its ability to cope with the harsh environment remain unknown.

  • Coastal dunes are characterised by plant species adapted to harsh conditions. Salinity and other factors (soil pH, nutrients, and climate events) vary along the landward gradient. The current study investigated the effects of environmental factors on the occurrence and composition of coastal dune plants. Ellenberg ecological indicator values (EIVs), species tolerance values (TVs), and species niche models for salinity, nutrient availability, and soil reaction were determined.

  • The precision "Systematic and quantitative evaluation of rice drought tolerance and construction of high throughput screening platform" identification and evaluation of rice drought resistance always is the key problem for succession of drought resistance study and breeding. We found that grain yield-related traits of rice have ecological effect with soil moisture conditions. Therefore, gradient and quantitative water controlling (GQWC) experiment was carried out in order to study the evaluation system of rice drought tolerance.

  • Exercise training is crucial for maintaining physical and mental health in aging populations. However, as people participate in structured exercise training, they tend to behaviorally compensate by decreasing their nonexercise physical activity, thus potentially blunting the benefits of the training program.

  • The explosive growth in taxonomic metagenome profiling methods over the past years has created a need for systematic comparisons using relevant performance criteria. The Open-community Profiling Assessment tooL (OPAL) implements commonly used performance metrics, including those of the first challenge of the initiative for the Critical Assessment of Metagenome Interpretation (CAMI), together with convenient visualizations.

  • Bioassessment of surface waters is one of the most important approaches to predict the deterioration of ecosystems and achieve environmental sustainability according to the application of the European Water Framework Directive. The present review emphasizes the importance of the bioassessment of freshwater quality especially running waters based on diatom metrics. Nutrient enrichment and hydromorphological alternation driven by human activities are the main factors for the ecological compromise of freshwater ecosystems.

  • Below-ground linkage between plant and fungal communities is one of the major drivers of terrestrial ecosystem dynamics. However, we still have limited knowledge of how such plant–fungus associations vary in their community-scale properties depending on fungal functional groups and geographic locations.

  • In the summers of 2012 and 2013, vegetation of Thandiani in the Western Himalayas of Pakistan was surveyed and quantified. We took evidence from relationships between 252 species and 11 measured environmental factors as well as changes in the associations’ structure among 50 analysed stations with 1500 m2 plots.

  • Cold seeps occur in geologically active and passive continental margins, where pore waters enriched in methane are forced upward through the sediments by pressure gradients. The advective supply of methane leads to dense microbial communities with high metabolic rates. Anaerobic methane oxidation presumably coupled to sulphate reduction facilitates formation of carbonates and, in many places, generates extremely high concentrations of hydrogen sulphide in pore waters.

  • This textbook provides study materials for the participants of the course named Multivariate Analysis of Ecological Data that we teach at our university for the third year. Material provided here should serve both for the introductory and the advanced versions of the course. We admit that some parts of the text would profit from further polishing, they are quite rough but we hope in further improvement of this text.

  • Because of its accessibility, the intertidal zone has offered excellent opportunities to study the adaptations of individual organisms and populations to their environment, and the factors controlling community composition. Early work on seashores concentrated on the problems of life in an environment characterized by steep gradients in physical conditions, but in more recent years, the focus of research on the fascinating shore ecosystems has been on understanding the processes controlling their productivity and dynamic functioning.
