Text Structure and Rhetorical Quality In the DET, each student’s writing was given a banded score of 1-5 for content, organization, and language, respectively. Based on the banded scores for these separate areas, each essay was also assigned a weighted band of 1-5, which was calculated by giving one weighting for content and double weightings for both organization and language. For the posttest scripts, a tutor who had the experience of teaching ES5001A and of marking DET was engaged to mark all the essays based on the same set of DET descriptors.

A first major defect lies in its insistence that (real world) problem solv- ing must be the focus of school mathematics ([N1], p.6) and the particular way this decision is implemented. A second major defect is that the floor of mathematics education has been set far too low (cf. [N1], p.9). The ceiling, which is described as “the NCTM Standards for College-Intending Students”, is consequently also dragged down.

Strong elementary and secondary schools are the next building block of a strong foundation for future workforce success. At each level, effective principals and teachers are at the core of helping students to master new material and mature into creative, highly capable, responsible adults. Along with quality instruction, high standards, rigorous assessments, and strong accountability can also significantly improve academic performance. 46 The secondary school goals and curriculum must be aligned with the goals and curricula of post-high school institutions.

Before you start trying to decide whether your idea is correct, you should stop to ask whether it is interesting. If it isn't interesting, no one will care whether it is correct or not. So try it out on a few people|see if they think that it is worth pursuing. What would follow from this idea if it is correct? Would it have lots of implications or would it just be a dead end? Always remember that working on this particular idea has an opportunity cost|you could be spending your time working on a dierent idea. Make sure that the expected benets cover that opportunity cost....

Conversations, especially with people in business, are often very fruitful. Commerce is conducted in many ways, and most of them have never been subjected to a serious economic analysis. Of course you have to be careful not to believe everything you hear| people in business usually know a set of rules that work well for running their own business, but they often have no idea of where these rules come from or why they work, and this is really what economists tend to nd interesting.
