Pigeon pea is majorly grown in north-eastern dry zone of Karnataka and it carries a unique position in every cropping system of this zone. Crop Productivity of pigeonpea is being low in the north-eastern dry zone of Karnataka and this is due to several reasons. One of the main important reason is flower drop and poor seed setting. To overcome and reduce this problem and to enhance productivity of pigeonpea, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kalburgi, has introduced a product known as Pulse Magic (consists of nutrients and Plant growth regulators) as foliar spray.

The frontline demonstrations (FLD’s) on BRG-5 variety of pigeon pea were conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra of Ramanagara District, Karnataka State. Initially farm trials of BRG-5 variety were conducted during 2012-13 and was released by University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru during 2014-15, which is resistant to wilt. Improved cultivation practices were demonstrated in farmer’s fields for three consecutive years. The results of the demonstrations showed higher yields compared to traditional farmer’s practices followed for pigeon pea cultivation.

Poor and inconsistent yields of the Pigeonpea cultivation across different environments grown in respective seasons reduce the economic benefits for the farmers. Besides tolerances/ resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses, plant type and seed yield components of Pigeonpea are the principal determinants of the consistent yields. The contemporary research was orchestrated for the identification of QTLs for plant type and seed yield components.
