Economics of turmeric cultivation

The objective of the study was to determine the appropriate doses of micro-organic and phosphorus fertilizers for good growth, high rhizomes yield and enhancing the economic efficiency of red turmeric cultivated in gray soil in Thu Duc city. The twofactor experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications.

The objective of this study was to determine the appropriate rates of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers for growth, yield and economic efficiency of red turmeric cultivated on the gray soil in Ho Chi Minh City. The field experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Research Station in Nong Lam University, Ho Chi Minh City from December 2020 to October 2021.

Turmeric strictly speaking is a condiment crop which has been used for colouring, flavoring and medicinal purposes. Turmeric occupies prominent position among the spices produced in India. It ranks fourth in area and second in production. In the area of export, turmeric occupies second position in terms of quantity and fourth position in the export earnings among the spices. Turmeric the golden spice is widely cultivated in different countries such as India, China, Myanmar, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Indonesia etc.

The present study was conducted during the year 2018-19 in West Jaintia Hills District, Meghalaya. Out of total eleven districts in the state, West Jaintia Hills District was selected as this district has the highest area under turmeric cultivation. Laskein block and Thadlaskein block of West Jaintia Hills District were purposively selected for the study and multistage sampling procedure was followed. Turmeric growers were randomly selected from six villages by using stratified random sampling with proportional allocation method making a total sample of 120 respondents for the study.
