Ectomycorrhizal diversity

Coniophora olivacea is a basidiomycete fungus belonging to the order Boletales that produces brown-rot decay on dead wood of conifers. The Boletales order comprises a diverse group of species including saprotrophs and ectomycorrhizal fungi that show important differences in genome size.

The Tropical Thorn Forest at foot hills of Niligris located in Forest College and Research Institute, Mettupalayam under Jackanari Reserve forest, Tamil Nadu, India was scouted and surveyed for the presence and prevalence of Ectomycorrhizal Fungal association. About Twelve different groups of fruiting bodies of ECM fungi were identified and their prevalence index ranged between 40-80% indicating wide diversity and dependency of forest trees on ECM fungi.

Below-ground linkage between plant and fungal communities is one of the major drivers of terrestrial ecosystem dynamics. However, we still have limited knowledge of how such plant–fungus associations vary in their community-scale properties depending on fungal functional groups and geographic locations.

The aim of the present investigation was to prepare an inventory of ectomycorrhiza prevailing in Zabarvan forest range of Western Himalayas of Kashmir and assess their diversity index and species richness. Three forest sites viz., Dachigam, Shalimar and Shankaracharia hills were surveyed periodically for three consecutive years (2011-2013) for ectomycorrhiza. A total number of 67 species in 23 genera belonging to 21 families in 07 orders were recorded. The study revealed that mycorrhizal fungal species richness was more in autumn season (45 species) and less in summer (11 species).

The third edition of The Fungal Community has been compiled by a new set of editors. The three of us were impressed with the quality and content of the previous two editions and hope that we have matched the work of George Carroll and Don Wicklow in this new volume. The aims and objectives of this volume are explained in our introductory chapter, but in brief, we have tried to address some of the current discussions in ecology (diversity and function, scaling issues, disturbance, invasive species) from a fungal perspective.
