Ebook "Edible films and coatings for food applications" brings together this vast wealth of scientific knowledge in a systematically organized volume. It examines the science, application, function, and market for edible films and coatings. Edible films and coatings play an important role in the quality, safety, transportation, storage, and display of a wide range of fresh and processed foods. Edible films and coatings, while preventing moisture loss and maintaining quality, prevent spoilage and microbial contamination of foods.

This research work aimed extraction and characterization of arrowroot starch. Besides, the effects of different concentrations of starch (2.59–5.41%, mass/mass) and concentrations of glycerol (9.95–24.08%, mass versus starch mass) on films properties were evaluated by a rotational central composite 22 experimental design.

The study "Effect of glycerol concentration on physical and texture properties of edible films prepared from karaya gum" formulated edible films based on karaya gum in the presence of glycerol. Physical properties of films were investigated by various methods including texture analysis and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC).

This study showed that the AV gel could be suitable for producing an edible film and coating with good physical characteristics such as low WVP (0.0037g/m2 .h.mmHg). AV's low WVP appeared to have a great impact on maintaining post-harvest quality especially reducing the percentage of weight loss of coated fruit during storage.

Lentinula edodes is one of the most popular edible mushroom species in the world and contains useful medicinal components, such as lentinan. The light-induced formation of brown film on the vegetative mycelial tissues of L. edodes is an important process for ensuring the quantity and quality of this edible mushroom.

Incorporation of other active ingredients in edible films and coatings enhances the safety and nutrition value of the fruits and vegetables. Food grade extracts including flavouring agents, pigments, antioxidants and antimicrobials can be added to modify their structure and advance characters of coatings, which when applied on produce increases its quality.

The present study was carried out to determine the synergistic effects of edible oils (Palm, sunflower, cotton seed, rice bran, castor, sesame) and non-edible oils (Neem, pongamia, citronella, rosemary, thyme, jatropha and lemongrass) in the suppression of malathion resistance Sitophilus oryzae (L.) and Tribolium castaneum (Herbst.) by adopting residual film method. Among edible oils, sesamum exhibited high level of malathion resistance suppression in S. oryzae with SR of 74.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the shelf- life of paneer wrapped with oregano essential oil treated starch and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) based edible packaging film. The edible film was prepared by adding starch (5g), carboxymethyl cellulose (15 % W/W starch) in distilled water (100mL) and glycerol (40ml/100g starch). Physicochemical, microbiological and sensory properties at (4±1°C) till spoilage was evaluated for paneer samples.

In Today’s scenario, various food industries use harmful packaging materials like plastics, metal, paper and combination of more than one material or composites. Approximately, 60% of plastics are being used in packaging and almost half of that is used to pack food-products, which is very dangerous for human health. Plastic is non-biodegradable and is not safe for food packaging and causes various health hazards. Plastic also reduces moisture and oxygen transfer rate of soil and deteriorates the quality of soil.

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of lemongrass oil (Cymbopogon citratus), citronella oil (Cymbopogon winterianus) and cajeput oil (Melaleuca leucadendron) against Aspergillus niger by the agar diffusion method. The selected oil was combined with the edible film (chitosan 1 % w/v or alginate 1 % w/v) and applied to preserve Cat Chu mango (infected by A. niger at 105 spores/ml) in 14 days at 30 oC.

Edible coatings or films have received considerable attention in recent years. Materials used in edible packaging (polysaccharide, lipid and protein-based and their composites) have apparent advantages over synthetic films. It could contribute to the reduction of environmental pollution. The main advantage of edible films over synthetics is that these may be safely eaten as a part of the food products and are environment-friendly at the same time as they increase the shelf life of fresh products.

This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of three kinds of essential oil, which are cassia oil, holy basil oil, and peppermint oil on inhibition of the plant pathogen Colletotrichum acutatum by the agar diffusion method. The selected essential oil was combined with the edible film (calcium-alginate 0.25 %; 0.5 %; and 1 % (w/v)) and applied in the green grape preservation (infected with C. acutatum 5 log spores/ml). The results showed that all essential oils have antifungal activity against C. acutatum with the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value of cassia oil was 2.

Edible films and coating are being widely studied as they have the potential to preserve the fresh produce, and are biodegradable. Taking this into account the aim of this study was to develop and evaluate the film properties such as thickness, percentage transmittance, mechanical properties such as percentage elongation and tensile strength, and sealability of the nanocomposite edible films based on aloe vera gel, glycerol and nanoparticles solution. After this all the film formulations were applied as a coating of Mango (Mangifera indica L.) and stored for 9 days at room temperature.
