Ebook "Trees in a changing environment: Ecophysiology, adaptation, and future survival (Plant ecophysiology, Volume 9)" delivers current state-of-the-science knowledge of tree ecophysiology, with particular emphasis on adaptation to a novel future physical and chemical environment. Unlike the focus of most books on the topic, this considers air chemistry changes (O3, NOx, and N deposition) in addition to elevated CO2 effects and its secondary effects of elevated temperature.

The present field experiment assesses the individual and combined effects of ethylenediurea (EDU, 200 ppm) and elevated CO2 (ECO2, 550 ppm), on two rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars, Sarjoo-52 and Pusa Basmati-1(PB-1) under FACE (Free Air Concentration Enrichment) facility.

Extreme weather events are predicted to increase, such as combined heat and drought. The CO2 concentration ([CO2]) is predicted to approximately double by 2100. We aim to explore how tomato physiology, especially photosynthesis, is affected by combined heat and drought under elevated [CO2] (e [CO2]).

The increase in reducing, non-reducing and total sugars at low P was 40, 122 and 93%, respectively as compared to control. This experiment shows that extra CO2 help to ameliorate the effect of P deficiency. The severe effects of P deficiency on growth and development of wheat plant was mitigated to some extent by elevated (CO2).

Changes in quality of host plants under elevated CO2 (eCO2) conditions likely in future can affect the survival, growth and development, and population dynamics of insect herbivores. The present study aimed to examine the growth and development of leaf feeding Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera) reared on groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) grown under elevated CO2 condition in open top chambers at Main Agricultural Research Station (MARS), University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur, Karnataka, India.

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of elevated levels of CO2 by exposing the artificially infested cigarette beetle in cured turmeric rhizomes to eight different concentrations of CO2 viz., 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 per cent with three replications of each treatment and the efficacy of treatments was tested based on cured turmeric rhizomes infestation and population buildup of L. serricorne.

The present investigation was undertaken to study the effect of elevated temperature and increased CO2 levels on biochemical and hormonal parameters of Tharparkar and Karan Fries heifers. The experiment was carried out in a climatic chamber. The animals of both breeds were exposed at different temperature and CO2 levels. Exposure conditions of 250C, 400 ppm CO2 level and 60% RH was taken as control condition.

Simultaneous increase of (CO2) and temperature causing significant changes in rice crop growth and productivity, but limited studies has been done in past to examine the interactive effect of these two key variables on the incidence of brown spot and sheath blight of rice.

A wheat growth model that includes the direct responses of canopy photosynthesis and transpiration to elevated CO2, and the response of crop growth to water stress has been developed and tested. Sensitivity analyses show that different cultivars have quite different responses to changes in ambient air temperature, ambient CO2 concentration and rainfall. Because crops reach maturity earlier under higher temperature, an increase of 3 oC may not impose further water stress to growth of a wheat crop.

The effect of modified atmosphere with elevated levels of CO2 against Sitophilus oryzae was studied by directly exposing the S. oryzae adults to eight concentrations of CO2 viz., 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 per cent with five exposure periods of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 hours to study the adult mortality.

The daily average concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere rose above 400 parts per million (ppm) for the first time on record in 2013, up from 280 ppm before the Industrial Revolution. The CO2 fertilization hypothesis stipulates that rising atmospheric CO2 has a positive effect on tree growth due to increasing availability of carbon. Hence, an attempt was made to understand the response of C. inophyllum seedlings to the elevated CO2 condition when they are grown in nutrient rich soils. Three month old seedlings were subjected to total nine treatments with four replication.

Climate change influences composite set of measurable physical, chemical and biological soil properties attributes which relate to functional soil processes. Climate change impacts soil chemical, physical and biological functions through a range of predicted global change drivers such as rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, elevated temperature, altered precipitation (rainfall) and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition (French et al., 2009).

Anthropogenic activities in few decades past have increased the concentration of the atmospheric greenhouse gases (GHGs) which leads to climate change. This changing climate will certainly have impact on agricultural production. A study was carried out during the kharif season of year 2017 inside the open top chamber (OTCs) in IARI farm, New Delhi to quantify the interactive effect of elevated CO2 and temperature on growth of rice crop.

The variation pattern of NCP with the ordinance was consistent for all treatments. Although differences among treatments were not statistically significant, average NCP values were lowest under CO2 enrichment conditions. NCP was lower at a high CO2 level and ambient nitrogen concentration compared to when nutrient availability was higher, suggesting that the low nutrient availability may modulate the community response to CO2 enrichment.
