This study explored and described nurses’ knowledge and attitudes regarding preparedness for a disaster in an obstetric unit in a public institution. The study aimed to make recommendations to improve disaster preparedness in an obstetric ward based on the nurses’ knowledge and attitudes.

Comprehensive geriatric assessment provided in hospital wards in frail patients admitted to hospital has been shown to reduce mortality and increase the likelihood of living at home later. Systematic geriatric assessment provided in emergency departments (ED) may be effective for reducing days in hospital and unnecessary hospital admissions, but this has not yet been proven in randomised trials.

In developing countries, Occupation health and safety is not given priority. The Needle stick Injuries (NSI) are among the incidents which risk the safety of Health Care workers in the hospital and healthcare setup. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of NSI’s in a tertiary care teaching hospital. A total of 70 NSI’s were reported and studied from January to December 2014. Needle stick injuries were more common among doctors and nurses and majority of the NSI’s were reported during blood collection (27%) followed by invasive procedures (21%).

MRSA has become a leading cause of infections in both the community and in hospitals. Healthcare-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA) are the strains that circulate and are transmitted to individuals within health care facilities. The infected or colonized patients serve as the major reservoirs of MRSA in health care facilities. Transient carriage of MRSA on the hands of health care workers is the predominant mode of transmission from health care workers to patients and further from one patient to other patient.

Accurate identification, isolation and antibiotic sensitivity pattern of non-fermenting gram-negative bacilli (NFGNB) is important for proper patient management. Aim: to find out the prevalence and the antibiotic sensitivity pattern of non- fermenters (NFs). A cross-sectional study was conducted on specimen collected from patients of tertiary care centre and send to microbiology laboratory for culture and sensitivity. Out of 4819 specimens collected in a year, 3363 (69.78%) were found culture positive and among them 378 (7.84%) were positive for NFGNB.

To identify bacterial contamination of cellular phones used by healthcare workers (HCWs) and to investigate antibiotic resistance patterns of recovered isolates. In addition, we assessed the possible risk factors for contamination of mobile phones. Mobile phones were sampled from HCWs across inpatient, outpatient and intensive care wards in Mansoura Emergency Hospital. Isolated bacteria were identified and subjected to disk diffusion test to detect their antibiotic resistance patterns. Sampled mobile phones had a contamination rate of 90.4% (P= 0.00).

One of the common causes of morbidity and mortality following burn injury is infections. The emergence of metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) in Gram negative bacilli (GNB) has reduced the available therapeutic options for effective treatment. Therefore, for screening of carbapenemase producers, a simple and inexpensive testing method is essential. To know the prevalence of MBL production in various gram negative isolates, to evaluate different phenotypic methods to detect MBL production and to find out antibiotic sensitivity profile of MBL producing gram negative bacilli.

Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) have offered hope for rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). However, their efficiency with smear-negative samples has not been widely studied in low income settings. Here, we evaluated in-house PCR assay for diagnosis of smear-negative TB using Lowenstein-Jensen (LJ) culture as the baseline test. A little over 50 years ago, my father had a heart attack. He was driven to the hospital by friends after having “indigestion” for 2 days. He spent 2 weeks as an inpatient on an unmonitored rehabilitation ward and was treated principally with warfarin and digitalis. He was lucky and survived, but in that era, more than 20% of patients with an acute myocardial infarction died.
