  • A systematic and comparative study on mutagenic ability of different doses of ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS, an alkylating agent), gamma rays (an ionizing radiation) and EMS + gamma rays was carried out in a well-adapted desi chickpea variety HPG17. All mutagenic treatments were effective in inducing genetic variability. A proportional decrease in germination of mutagen treated seeds as well as subsequent plant survival was observed with increase in mutagen dose.

  • This study was performed by exposing the seeds of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) to ethyl methane sulphonate [EMS] sodium azide [SA] to study their effects on various morphological traits when compared with control. The seeds of groundnut were pre-soaked in distilled water for 6 hours for ems and 24 hrs for SA. The SA, EMS solution was prepared in distilled water. Each concentration of SA, EMS was prepared in 100ml of distilled water for 300 groundnut seeds. These soaked seeds treated with different concentration of SA, EMS such as 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8, 0.10% and 0.12 %.

  • Unexpanded leaf rolls were used as explants for callus induction with different concentrations of mutagenic chemicals (sodium nitrite and ethylmethane sulfonate). The effect of these mutagenic chemicals on callusing, shooting and rooting was studied. Callus induction was observed in different concentrations of sodium nitrite (3 mg l-1 , 5 mg l-1 and 7 mg l-1 ) and EMS (0.6 µM, 0.8 µM, 1.0 µM) along with controls. Among all the treatments 3 mg l-1 (T4) SN and 0.6 µM EMS (T10) in 2009T5 were found to be the best for callus induction traits.

  • Induced qualitative mutation in JS-335 Soybean cultivar consisted of chlorophyll and viable mutants. The combination treatments exhibit wide spectrum and frequency on both M1 family and M2 plant basis for both. Increased in doses and concentrations of mutagens showed increased in spectrum and frequency. Chlorophyll mutants viz. albino, alboviridis, xantha, xantha- viridis and viridis and viable mutants viz., plant type, leaf, growth habit, flowering, pod, kernel and economic mutation were observed. Desirable mutants like bold poded, early maturing, and high yielding were also isolated.

  • In an attempt to develop superior Trichoderma viride isolates for improvement in chitinase Enzyme productivity, induction of mutants was applied. After application of different concentrations of Ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS) and Hydroxyl amine (HA) treatments on T.viride mutants were obtained. Trichoderma viride was determined by its physiological state so that change in genetical conditions could alter the antagonism. Hence, the genetic modification using mutagenesis offers the potential for producing improved bioprotection is likely to enhance their biocontrol.
