Our results based on 1’472 U.S. open-end equity funds between 1975 and 2002 clearly show that the impact of luck on performance is substantial. First, our estimators of the number of funds with differential, positive and negative performance is much lower than those obtained with the standard approach. It implies that our judgement on performance across the different investment categories can substantially differ from the one implied by the standard approach. Server Virtualization. In the first phase of VMware server virtualization, older servers consuming two units of rack space were replaced with larger, more efficient servers consuming four units of rack space. Two tiers of virtual server infrastructure were defined. Tier 1 offered high availability and disaster recovery for critical applications; of the approximately 400 applications supported by EMC’s worldwide IT organization, this tier served about 20 mission critical applications (increasing to 27 at the end of each fiscal quarter to support peak needs).

From 1992 to 2000, the pace of merger activity rose to unprecedented levels. An environment of sustained economic growth and rising stock prices facilitated transactions. Toward the end of 2000, the economic climate shifted and merger activity in the fourth quarter declined. The economy showed only small growth during the first quarter of 2001. Excess capacity in a number of industries had developed, and sales and profit disappointments began to widen. The business cycle had returned.
