This thesis examines empirically whether there is a link between education and economic growth in Chile during the period 1973-2005. This is done through the adoption of time-series analysis and co-integration techniques. Based on economic theory and empirical findings, potential implications for Chilean educational policy are then discussed.

Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF/CCN2) is an immediate early gene-encoded polypeptide modulating cell growth and collagen synthesis. The importance of CTGF/ CCN2 function is highlighted by its disregulation in fibrotic disorders. In this study, we investigated the regulation and signaling pathways that are required for various stimuli of intracellular signaling events to induce the expression of the endogenous CTGF/CCN2gene in smooth muscle cells.

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) binding protein-related protein-1 (IGFBP-rP1) modulates cellular adhesion and growth in an IGF⁄insulin-dependent or independent manner. It also shows tumor-suppressive activity in vivo. We recently found that a single-chain IGFB-rP1 is proteolytically cleaved to a two-chain form by a trypsin-like, endogenous serine protein-ase, changing its biological activities.
