Endotracheal aspirates

The Lotrach endotracheal tube has a unique low-volume, low-pressure (LVLP) cuff, which has been designed to prevent pressure injury to the tracheal wall. We aimed to estimate the pressure exerted on the tracheal wall by the LVLP cuff and a conventional cuff in a bench-top, clinical and radiological study.

Aspiration of subglottic secretions past the endotracheal tube (ETT) cuff is a prerequisite for developing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Subglottic secretion drainage (SSD) ETTs reduce aspiration of subglottic secretions and have demonstrated lower VAP rates.

The use of supraglottic airway devices (SADs) in surgeries with laparoscopic pneumoperitoneum and Trendelenburg (LPT) positioning is controversial due to concerns about insufficient pulmonary ventilation and aspiration.

During an emergency endotracheal intubation, rapid sequence induction intubation (RSII) with cricoid pressure (CP) is frequently implemented to prevent aspiration pneumonia. We evaluated the CVS in endotracheal intubation in RSII with CP, in comparison with a direct laryngoscope (DL).

Diagnosis of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) depends on the presence of clinical, radiological and microbiological findings. Endotracheal suction aspirate (ETSA) is the commonest respiratory sample sent for culture from intubated patients. Very few studies have compared quantitative and semi-quantitative processing of ETSA cultures for LRTI diagnosis.

Mechanical ventilation is a life-saving procedure, but it is associated with a high risk of acquiring respiratory infections. Hence to prevent it and initiate empirical antimicrobial therapy, knowledge of microbial profile and their local antimicrobial sensitivity pattern are essential. A prospective analytical study of Endotracheal tube (ETT) aspirates of mechanically ventilated patients in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was done over a period of six months (Dec2015-May2016).

Nosocomial infections are a critical issue among intubated patients. Respiratory tract infection in relation to intubation and/ or mechanical ventilation has been reported to vary from 4% to 28% and this rate has been thought to be 21 times higher than in patients without endotracheal tube. The aim of our study was to identify the pathogens isolated from culture of endotracheal tube aspirates and determine their antibiogram. Patients on mechanical ventilation (MV) for >48 h in the intensive care units (ICU), critical care unit (CCU), PICU and NICU were included in this study.

Ventilator-associated tracheobronchitis (VAT) is a common intensive care unit (ICU)- acquired infection. Its incidence ranges from 1.4 to 19% of critically ill patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation. This infection is considered as an intermediate process between between colonization and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). 1. To study the incidence of VAT. 2. To study the microbiological profile and anti-microbial susceptibility. This is a prospective study of 149 intubated patients. The endotracheal aspirates were collected and processed.

Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) is a common hospital acquired infection. Its prevalence ranges from 9-24%. It leads to increased mortality and increased health care costs. VAP due to Acinetobacter baumannii is notorious for its multidrug resistance potential. The study reveals the characteristics of Acinetobacter baumanii in a tertiary care hospital. This is a prospective study of 100 patients. The endotracheal aspirates were collected, processed and isolate identified. Antimicrbial susceptibility testing was done, biofilm testing and MIC testing for Meropenem was also done.

The present study showed GNB as the most common organism isolated. Pseudomonas spp (24.6%), followed by Klebsiella spp (22.8%), Acenitobacter spp (12.3%), former being predominant in early onset variety & the latter in the late onset VAP. Other organisms like E.coli, Citrobacter species, Proteus species, staphylococcus aureus and CONS are isolated in their decreasing frequency. Most of the organisms are resistance to Beta lactams and cephalosporins but sensitive to carbepenems.

Non-fermenting Gram negative bacilli (NFGNB) are a group of bacteria which are aerobic, non sporing and most commonly they are saprophytes. They are also found as commensals in both man and animals. NFGNB are previously considered as a contaminant but now it is emerged as a important cause for life threatening nosocomial infections and also multidrug resistant organisms. Materials and methods: One year prospective study was conducted and our aim is to characterise the non fermenters from various clinical samples and their antibiogram.

Respiratory tract infections are very common in critically ill patients in hospital settings. Endotracheal aspiration is a simple and easy method to perform especially in ICU patients for obtaining samples from lower respiratory tract. Therefore, this study was carried out to determine the microbiological spectrum and antibiotic susceptibility profile of Endotracheal aspirates among patients admitted in our institute. The present study was conducted on 348 ETT aspirate samples received in the Department of Microbiology, GMC, Jammu for a period of 1 year i.e. April 2017- 2018.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa are established pathogens predominantly in various nosocomial infections which are often life threatening due to limited therapeutic options. The present study was undertaken to analyze the antibiotic susceptibility pattern in the clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, so as to establish the current therapeutic options available for treatment in this geographical area of North East India. The study was conducted on 150 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from various clinical samples.
