FtsZ is conserved in almost all bacteria and is an essential protein for bacterial cell division. The cell division is prevented by the inhibitors against FtsZ’s functions. Thus, FtsZ is known as an attractive, and underexploited novel antibacterial target protein. In the aim of further research of the highly bioactive benzofuran and triazine derivatives, the synthesis of 1,2,4-triazine derivatives bearing the benzofuran moiety has been undertaken. Using a simple and convenient method, a three steps synthesis of novel functionalized 1,2,4-triazine derivatives from readily available starting materials has been described.

This paper deals with synchronization analysis problem for a class of fractional-order neural networks with unbounded delays. Using the Lyapunov function method combined with fractional Halanay inequality, we derive a novel sufficient condition for asymptotic stability of the error system resulting in two neural networks are synchronized.

This research is built upon the determination of the Eigenpairs of one and two dimensional positive differential operators with periodic boundary conditions. The Schrödinger equation was solved for positive operators in both one and two dimensions. Fourier series were used to express the derivatives as the summation of Fourier terms. This led to a novel approach for the calculation of the eigenmodels of a perturbed potential well. The perturbation can be done via an electric field applied to the potential well.

This thesis proposes and implements a new and novel solution on simulators and real devices to solve the mobility problem in a VPN. The new solution adds mobility support to existing L2TP/IPsec (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol/IP Security) tunnels. The new solution tunnels Layer 2 packets between VPN clients and a VPN server without using Mobile IP, without incurring tunnel-re-establishment at handoff, without losing packets during handoff, achieves better security than current mobility solutions for VPN, and supports fast handoff in IPv4 networks.

This thesis has two key results, a study on the effect of carbon in electron-beam deposited platinum nano-wires and a novel temperature sensing glass substrate for marker-free thermometry. The thesis focus on the effect of carbon contamination in plasmonic nano-wires composed mainly of platinum produced from FEBID. Because carbon acts as an insulator in the platinum/carbon composite, we model the effect of carbon impurities by reducing the charge carrier concentration inthe platinumwire.

Once the mechanical properties of printed TPU are characterised, a novel, low cost, and environmentally friendly method for concrete casting using printed TPU moulds is proposed in this thesis. Additively manufactured TPU mould is developed to cast complex concrete structures. A planar topologically optimized cantilever and a free-form 3D column are cast using the proposed TPU mould. Good surface quality is obtained for the cast concrete elements, and the moulds can be reused many times after cleaning.
