Little is known about reasons that influence parents’ decision to participate in studies enrolling healthy children. The aim of this observational study was to verify the reasons that lead pregnant women to give their consent or to refuse participation to a newborn cohort study with a long follow up time.

California also has a “General Child Care” program, in which the state contracts directly with licensed centers or networks of FCC homes to provide ECE. This program was established in the 1960s through Title 5, and sets standards for higher staff qualifications than is required under regular licensing. Payment is set at a standard statewide reimbursement rate. Funding for this program was $797 million with an enrollment of 86,169 in 2010–2011 (Ehlers 2011). There are 1,358 General Child Care centers/providers in the state (CCCRRN 2009).

We predict that in 2019, Medi-Cal coverage will increase by 1.2 to 1.6 million (under the base and enhanced scenarios, respectively). Enrollment in Healthy Families will decline slightly as older children under 133 percent FPL will now qualify for Medi-Cal. An estimated 1.8 to 2.1 million will be enrolled in the Exchange with subsidies, while 2.1 to 2.2 million will remain in the non-group market or be enrolled in the Exchange without subsidies.11 Finally, the number of uninsured will decline by 1.8 to 2.7 million people, leaving 3.0 to 4.0 million Californians without coverage.

Studies have consistently shown that birthweight decreases steadily with decreasing social status. 25 Figure 1 shows this decrease in birthweight between the most privileged and the most deprived socio-economic groups among babies born in 2000 enrolled in the UK Millenium Cohort Study. Mothers living in the most privileged socio-economic group had an average birthweight 200gm heavier than those living in the most disadvantages households (workless households).
