Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) emerge as compatible alternatives to conventional insecticides in controlling Holotrichia parallela larvae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). However, the immune responses of H. parallela against EPNs infection remain unclear.

The bacteria Photorhabdus associated symbiotically with the entomopathogenic nematodes of genus Heterorhabditis is an effective killer of insect-pests belonging to a different order. The bacteria Photorhabdus encodes numerous toxins once inside the midgut of insects and cause rapid death by employing multiple toxicity mechanism. In this paper, we isolated the bacteria Photorhabdus associated with Heterorhabditis nematodes using a modified White trap and demonstrated a bioassay of toxicity against last instar larva of wax moth Galleria mellonella.

The investigations on bio-efficacy of entomopathogenic nematode, Heterorhabditis indica against white grub was carried out at Biocontrol Research Laboratory, Department of Entomology, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh during 2014-15. Bio-efficacy of H. indica against groundnut white grub in pot revealed that mortality of white grub reached up to 73.34 % at higher inoculums level (100 IJs/grub) after 120 hrs of application. Per cent of mortality of white grub increased with rise in inoculum levels and exposure time.

The common cutworm (turnip moth) Agrotis segetum (Denis & Schiffermuller) is nearly cosmopolitan insect pest of potato. The efficacy of the entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) Steinernema carpocapsae and Heterorhabditis indica was evaluated against different developmental stages of A. segetum under laboratory conditions. In laboratory studies, significant mortality of second instar larvae was recorded by H. indica (73.3-100 per cent) and 63.3-100 per cent by S. carpocapsae after 48 hrs of treatment at EPNs suspension of 50-300 IJs/ml (1 ml per larva).

Several species of entomopathogenic nematodes in the families Steinernematidae (Steinernema) and Heterorhabditidae (Heterorhabditis) are being produced commercially and used as biological control agents against many soil insect pests and insects in cryptic habitats in many parts of the world.
